If you have patience with crowds, Fry's has a Canon Powershot with 12 MP that appears to be an AS1100IS (IS = image stabilization = less blur) for $129 (same as Amazon) with 4X optical zoom. I have had good luck with my Canon cameras in the past.

If you can live with fewer features you can probably buy an older camera having 6-8 MP that works for you. Kenmore Camera has used digital cameras and I have found them to be very helpful when selecting new cameras. Good luck.

Canon has been ahead of the curve on digital photography so any of their digital cameras will impress. The Nikon Coolpix line is also very good. I would not buy !#$!@ from Samsung.

Hey changingtimes, I love the NYT's David Pogue on digital cameras. Here's his post on cameras under $300 (most under $250)

Oh yes you can read David Pogue but he's really just summarizing what I already told you :)
