Tuesday March 31st at 5:30p, a driver of a gray suburu wagon was observed heading West on Admiral Way, too engrossed in his cellphone conversation to be bothered with yielding to a pedestrian well into the crosswalk at Admiral Way SW and SW 47th. Had the pedestrian not glanced up the road, we may have had a repeat of the Tatsuo Matthew Nakata/Ephraim Schwartz tragedy. The driver never touched his brakes but swerved into the turn lane after his car entered the crosswalk. Never was his conversation interrupted. Witnesses followed him, license plate and driver description was reported to police who now have him recorded as a “Reckless Driver”. He nearly rear-ended two other cars on the way to his destination, all the while phone to ear. I implore everyone to call police whenever you witness such gross negligence and stop these careless drivers before another neighbor is murdered! Be the change you want in the world.

I think I would have gone after him in my anger. My solution these days: I’m stopping even further back now–way back–so if I see someone crossing and some clown behind me plows into me, at least I won’t mow down the poor person in the crosswalk. This is the only way I know to help prevent a horrendous accident.

And, we all know this is a huge problem in many places.

Yeah – camera phones take a bit too long to get ‘warmed up’. I saw something similar yesterday, around the same time, but this time going East on Admiral. A car was behind Metro and a minivan came speeding up behind the car, then decided to go into that middle turn lane and pass both the car and Metro. If there had been someone crossing at that crosswalk at 48th/49th(?), then the minivan wouldn’t have had a chance to see them or stop. Luckily, there were no pedestrians around.

I hope the Metro driver was able to report the minivan, as it would’ve had a great view of its plates. Passing when there’s such poor visibility (bus + curving road) is ridiculous. Passing is best done out in country roads when you can see for miles and you’re stuck behind a livestock truck or something. :p

The 8 am to 9am commuters on I-35 have gotten used to the “your speed is” sign and now seem to be competing to see who can post the highest numbers.

SPD traffic team should have no problem puling in 5k an hour in fines this week though they might miss the high school racers at 2:30 due to spring break.

If I need to quickly save a number on my cell phone, since it takes so long to get it out, etc, I always type the number in like a phone number and I can temp save it in my contacts. I do that with bus numbers when I need them or the day that the city worker in his city van was sound asleep with his seat back, mouth open and snoring at 8 am in the morning. (Even if he was on break, not what taxpayers want to see). That way, I don’t have to remember the numbers and can erase after I have done my complaining (or commending)
