Crazy copycat killers on Craig’s List

last year a nanny was lured off the Craig’s List child care section and killed; it was in the Midwest, but still

I’ve been advertising my babysitting and nanny service on CL child care for 5+ yrs; lately it’s been overwhelmed with spammers, scammers, and who knows what else?

yeh, that was in the Midwest, and the big news CL “alleged” killer is in NY

but anyone who studies criminal behavior knows there are copycats

please be aware, careful; not paranoid, just careful

this guy was just caught in Seattle, I assume copying the NY killer

    Tuesday, April 28, 2009 –

Man tries to use Craigslist to lure a woman for sex, then kill her, police say

I don’t think we need to be paranoid or hysterical about using CL.

The statistics of how I’m likely to be harmed put the chance of some copycat CL killer getting me at about nil.

I’d be more worried about being hit trying to cross California.

If you read the article behind the link Diane posted above, you’ll read about a very unintelligent person who documented in detail the crime he wanted to commit, with a police officer.

Probably not a lot to be concerned about unless you’re looking at casual encounters for some freaky deaky in which case you should just shoot for something on the phone or with a webcam so you can be safe.

not paranoid; and my post stated “not paranoid”

    ~

I use CL daily, for years, love it; CL is not the problem; it’s the creeps using it as an easy ploy that is the problem

    ~

as I review CL child care section daily, and post there; the scams have increased exponentially recently

    ~

there are many naïve/gullible who post on CL, most young and female; some post comments as a post when the usual Nigerian scammers email them, like it’s a new “alert”; so my guess is these naïve young women could be very susceptible to more cunning, more normal appearing scams

    ~

my main concern is for the less aware, less internet savvy, who divulge too much personal info on CL or other sites, and in desperation for a job, may respond to a “lure”; that’s exactly who the scammers are going after right now

    ~

it would be hard to predict/protect from being hit crossing California

    ~

being careful on the internet or CL is more about educating oneself, being thoughtful, careful about who to respond to and what to say, when/where to meet, etc

    ~

so far all the victims I’ve heard about have been female, and young, lured by a young male

    ~

the nanny was killed by a young male who looks like a teenager

    ~

again, as stated in original post; it’s not about being paranoid; it’s about being careful

    ~

btw, I’m a huge fan of Craig Newmark; and especially impressed that he’s been very supportive of the nanny’s family and attending her Memorial
