blueMemberI don’t eat a lot of fast food, but when I do I certainly don’t want to see the calories and fat content listed on the sign right next to the items. Please go back to posting the info on fliers or in a less conspicuous spot. It ruins my enjoyment of occassionally splurging on a fast food treat.

blueMemberCarl’s Junior? Never even been in one, nor is there one anywhere near here as far as I know. I’m talking about Baskin Robbins Ice Cream and a few other spots in West Seattle. I’ll forgive your nastiness-I’m going to assume you’ve just had a bad day.

WSBKeymasterPost deleted, thanks to the person who flagged it. FWIW Carl’s Jr. has a location in Tacoma. And for further discussion of this topic, I’ll just warn any new arrivals, criticism based on size – fat or thin, tall or short – is offlimits on WSB. But if you can discuss size- and nutrition-related matters in a civil manner, go right ahead.

DianeParticipantthere are MANY good reasons for this new law
~
I love having the info to CHOOSE where to pick my big treat calories; and to choose a balanced diet based on real info instead of branding hype
~
years ago, I was offered some KFC fried chix, you know that juicy greasy battered heavy skin-on (yummy?); my comment; “thanks, but no; it’s like 1000 calories/bite; if I’m going to eat that many calories, I’d rather save it for truffles” super yummmm!!!
~
re new law; read while back that somehow Starbucks was getting around listing calories on their board at the new Pike/1st Ave store; I went down there to check it out; had to search all over store for the little basket holding pamphlet of nutrition info; in itsy bitsy font; and many of the high calorie items had a note (without cream)so in other words, you still had to add another what, 100 calories/tbsp/whatever for cream; I love cream; it’s just the fact they’re still trying to hide the truth about high calories in many of their drinks, when other food businesses have to comply with the law?
~
I wish there was all types of Asian fast food on every corner; have never understood appeal of burgers

CaitParticipantCan I just say that as a weight watchers member this is a GOD SEND!!! If you don’t like it, don’t pay attention. Obesity is a huge problem in this country and anything we can do to bring some awareness to what we eat is OK in my book.
It’s like the graphic pictures of lungs on Canadian cigarette packs. Not pleasant to look at but it makes a point doesn’t it? And this is meant to be informative not inflammatory.

KevinParticipantGood point Cait – and lets not forget the needs of people who have had heart attacks, and diabetics just to name a couple. Also consider folks with food allergies.

CMPParticipantYes, it’s an unpleasant reminder, but I guess I appreciate having that information right there to see. NYC has been doing this for awhile so it’s about time Seattle does. I was quite shocked to see how many calories are in a small DQ blizzard yesterday…the small wasn’t small enough IMO. Looks like I won’t be getting that treat very frequently now that I know it can have up to 600 calories in it. But a large could have up to 1500…ouch!

CaitParticipantIf Metro Market ever decides to do this I’m up The Chubby River without a paddle.
Incidentally – is that information available anywhere for Metro?

SueParticipantI think the education is helpful. No one is judging me if I still choose to eat the 1,000 calorie item, but it might make me take pause before ordering it. And on other days I just don’t care and order it anyway. :) I’d rather them do this than decide that we don’t deserve to make the choice and do away with “bad” foods.
May 27, 2009 at 6:08 am #667631
JanSParticipanthey, we ignore the small print on many things…just ignore it there, too ;-)
it’s definitely a wake up call…hopefully makes one think about the choices that one has control over…even the choice of deciding to eat there :)

CMPParticipantCait, I do recently recall seeing nutrition info for the soups at Met Market, but am not sure about the rest of the deli. I always wondered how healthy the MM soups are, given how delicious they taste, and they’re really not bad for you, thank goodness! However, I’m no nutrition expert so take my “it’s healthy” opinion with a grain of salt!

vincentMemberoh WSB so behind the times, there is a Carls Jr in Renton. 4525 NE 4th St Renton, WA 98059, they are opening one soon in lacey, and I am sure before long in the city.

alki_2008Participantblue – most of the places where the calorie information is posted is REQUIRED by law, for restaurants with more than 15 nationwide locations.
The addition of the calories makes some menus a lot more crowded, but some places have done a good job of incorporating the calorie info without making the menu unreadable.
Personally, I thought it was a bit silly to make this a legal requirement. How many people didn’t already know that a venti mocha at Starbucks is chocked full of calories, or that a Big Mac is unhealthy? I just hope they don’t have to start posting the fat calories and/or sodium content and/or sugar content on the menu too. If people want that info, then just have one board somewhere in the restaurant that has all that info…but I want to be able to quickly find the food item and price when I look at the menu itself.
Just my .02

WSBKeymasterRenton, huh? Had no idea. Our fast-food preference runs more for New Teriyaki and Wok down the hill, but we’ve visited the Carl’s in Tacoma the past couple years in connection with Zoolights visits. Former Californians/Nevadans so we knew of them from there. No candle to In-n-Out Burger, of course, but given the fact they’re not in Oregon yet, I don’t have much hope they’d leapfrog to WA.
May 27, 2009 at 8:22 pm #667636
alki_2008ParticipantBut Carl’s Jr has tasty chicken options.
The triples at In-and-Out (with special-request grilled onions) were oh so good…even if they were heart-stoppers. ;)
May 27, 2009 at 8:23 pm #667637
ZenguyParticipantI for one appreciate being able to make educated choices. Who knew a chicken soft taco had more calories than a crispy beef burrito?
May 27, 2009 at 10:03 pm #667638
biankatParticipantWOW! Being a SoCal girl I’m very familiar with Carl’s. Glad to see they’re making their way up here. I’ve had many a serving of their fried zucchini in my time. Alas, I do wish In-n-Out would follow suit, but I fear it isn’t gonna happen.
May 27, 2009 at 11:08 pm #667639
ZenguyParticipantThe founder of Carl’s Jr. was a notorious sexist and supported many anti abortion and anti gay iniatives. I will never patronize a Carl’s Jr.!
May 28, 2009 at 12:28 am #667640
vincentMemberEveryone who had money hated someone, In and out has pslams on the cups, people see past it for animal style fries.
besides Carl has been dead for what 30 years? let it go. -
