cbofParticipantHi! About this time last year, a kind neighbor let me borrow small roto tiller for a yard project I had. Maybe you’ll read this, and maybe I can borrow it again sometime in the next few weeks? Last year’s project was somewhat of an experiment, but it was a success, and saved the use of a lot of chemicals, and quite frankly a lot of money, too! Would like to finish what I started, and would be grateful to borrow it again. Or if anyone else has one and wouldn’t mind!

KatherineLParticipantIs this to break up sod? I have a very small one that does fine with casual weeds in previously broken ground, but doesn’t do matted roots.

HelperMonkeyParticipantI wonder if this is something the West Seattle Tool Library could help with? http://wstoollibrary.org/

stinaParticipantThe West Seattle Tool Library doesn’t have any gas powered tools, and the one electric tiller we had was checked out two years ago and never returned If you can’t get one from a neighbor, check with Center Tool Rental down in White Center.

cbofParticipantHi! I didn’t know about the tool rental in white center. Cool. It’s not sod, but it’s pretty hard packed…

JTBParticipantA tiller and a cultivator are very different in capacity. You need a tiller for packed soil.

CMParticipantIf you can’t find one from a neighbor, I second the rec for Center Tool Rentals. Nice people, and they’ll give you exactly what you need.

cbofParticipantHmm, seems what they have for tillers are too big for what I’m doing. I might still stop by to double check. I guess what I’m looking for is a garden tiller.

CMParticipantcbof, it sounds like you might need what they call a cultivator, or “Mantis”, which Center Tool does have. It’s a small tiller, cuts a path about 16″ and is designed to get in and around plants. I’d go talk with them. If that doesn’t work, post up again.
How big is the area you need to do, and what’s it like? Makes a big difference if it’s a garden area or sod.
