vincentMemberWhats up with the drag racing to the bridge lately. I have been taking the full lane on the downhill ( northbound) for visibility on my bicycle and In the last month I have noticed cars frequently passing in the middle lane, despite my speed being at par with the traffic in front of me.
Seen two near accidents as they slam on the brakes to avoid hitting the car in front of me, and one near t bone as the passing car didn’t see a car coming into traffic. Avalon is maybe a half mile long do people really need to accelerate to 50?

DianaParticipantI agree, it’s been bad lately and getting worse. I suggest calling SPD and requesting enforcement. The number is: 684-8757 and I’ll second you.

AlParticipantAvalon is on the list for a traffic calming measure, like Fauntleroy, in 2009. It should be less contentious we can only hope since it’s already only two lanes. I have a spedo on my bike and agree with you Vincent – I am doing the speed limit and am frequently passed going downhill on Avalon.

GenHillOneParticipantYup – and trying to safely enter uphill from Yancy (my clutch begs me to avoid Genessee!) has been especially hard too. Not just the speed of oncoming traffic, but when the breaks are few and far between, it’s hard to enter the middle lane (to then merge right) when downhill cars are passing through the turn land :|

swimcatMemberAvalon is scary, especially on a bike! With all the parked cars, driveways to condo garages, potholes, etc.. i’m never surprised to see crashed parked cars along there. And I’m always scared for the cyclists making their way up and down that road; there isn’t any other option for them unfortunately.

vincentMemberIts typically fine, I would say most cars are fine on the climb up, and most days the ride down is a non issue. I try to queue up with traffic at the top of the hill to make it easier for the cars to know what I am doing, but in the last month or so, everyone wants to be speed racer. I am waiting for the day I have to slam on the brakes to avoid the accident that just occurred in front of me.
