kgdlgParticipantSo it basically boils down to “we shouldn’t support people who make bad decisions”. Last I checked everyone makes bad decisions once in a while, but rich people have a heck of a safety net the poor don’t have. That is fair!
For new years I am not going to respond to Hoop posts anymore.

JanSParticipanthooper, in a perfect world, we would all have that three month cushion. How nice that would be. Then, something befalls you, you use that 3 month cushion, but you still have another three months to get by on.Then what? You made a bad decision?
Just recently read a story about the latest in questions asked ON THE FIRST DATE! “What is your credit score?”. Not questions about family, not questions about what one wants out of life…nope…only credit score. How cold. Yes, it’s important…save it for the second date…geez…
women as a commodity, not as humans who are fallible. I hope we’re including men, too…it’s not just a woman thing….

Totally, kdglg. Makes perfect sense! I mean, just for example, my buddy should’ve known better than to be in that ice cream parlor when he was five, that a plane crashed into giving him lifelong PTSD. He should’ve avoided choosing to have a congenital condition that has required multiple expensive surgeries to address, many of which are not covered by insurance. Oh, and he totally could’ve decided not to have cartilage deterioration in his knee that makes it impossible for him to climb stairs or even walk or stand for significant periods, making physical labor a nonstarter.
But he does know all about austerity! Hands on learning, you might even say. ;)

JoBParticipantwell put datamuse
perhaps assuming that poverty is the result of poor decisions is a poor decision…
i don’t know who or what saves someone from that.
December 30, 2012 at 4:45 am #780333
datamuseParticipantTo be sure, I know people whose dumbass choices put them in a bad financial situation.
Then again, I’ve made some dumbass choices myself.
Near as I can tell, the difference between me and them consists mainly of luck.
Fickle thing, luck.
December 31, 2012 at 6:52 pm #780334
hooper1961Memberluck is indeed fickle. but planning and saving is not. why should people who save for a rainy day be forced (via taxes) to support those that do not?

becasue planning and saving for a rainy day isn’t always enough to save your sorry ass…
that’s why.
January 1, 2013 at 6:10 pm #780337
hooper1961Memberand the fact remains far too many people spend well beyond there means and when a calamity strikes look to the dole to bale them out!
heck just yesterday i shopped safeway and the person ahead of me was definitely heavy set and the food and beverage choices (pop and chips) ensure doctor employment security. AND what is really frustrating is not making that person pay for the poor choices. at least smokers pay added taxes for the choice.
January 1, 2013 at 6:50 pm #780338
miwsParticipantWere they an individual bag of chips, and a single pop, hoop, or larger/multiple quantities?
Maybe they were going to a New Year’s Eve party with friends, (yes, hoop, some of us have those), and that’s all they could contribute.
Now, of course, you’ll probably want to argue the appropriateness of you, as a hard working tax payer having to pay for their party contributions…..

hooper1961Memberi take after the side that believes you have to work for a living
January 4, 2013 at 2:48 am #780343
JoBParticipantyou definitely don’t belong to the side that thinks you should take care of your own business and let other people take care of theirs…
January 4, 2013 at 2:56 am #780344
hooper1961MemberJoB in fact I do belong to that side also as long as they do not use tax dollars to pay for their bad choices.
January 4, 2013 at 3:15 am #780345
JoBParticipanthoop..
you are far too busy making assumptions about other people
you have no idea what bad choices they have or haven’t made..
on the other hand.. i know a good deal about yours
you make them publicly every time you assume…
January 4, 2013 at 6:21 am #780346
hooper1961MemberJoB i believe in live and let live and believe the social welfare safety net is far to tight and is catching way to much by catch (aka able bodied and minded folks who should not be bailed out at taxpayer expense).
frankly government assistance needs to be limited to those that are physically handicapped or mentally challenged.
January 4, 2013 at 4:38 pm #780347

your two statements directly contradict one another
which by the way is one definition of mentally challenged.
