cjboffoliParticipantI have Qwest high-speed DSL service at my house near the Junction. Because I am very close to the switching station, which is across from the Post Office on California, I get brisk speeds, usually very close to the advertised 7 Mbps downstream.
Lately in the evenings I have noticed my service plummet to barely 1 Mbps downstream. I’ve called Qwest and they claim that from their end everything is normal. They claim that they are sending me a 7Mbps signal and that there is no sign of any kind of congestion in my area and that there is nothing they can do to explain it. During the day the service rips along at top speed. And almost like clockwork my service plummets at night.
I’ve ruled out any kind of equipment problems on my end. I’ve tested it with separate computers and separate modems. It doesn’t matter if I connect with Ethernet or with my wireless router. Something smells fishy.
I’ve talked to at least one other person who lives near the Junction and she has observed the same phenomenon. Qwest has publicly denied that they are throttling their bandwidth but I’m beginning to wonder if that is true.
I just thought I’d throw this out there to see if any WSB readers have had similar experiences lately with their Qwest DSL speeds dropping severely at night. Thanks in advance for your responses.

littlebrowndogParticipantI have been having a total lack of connectivity in the early mornings, mid-mornings, and early evenings. I live near the Junction. It has been going on for 3 days now. This has been a chronic problem for me, however. I have had the ISP to my house, all equipment (hard drive and ethernet cord and modem) replaced, and DSL techs out 3 different times. It has been an intermittent problem that once before became a near continuous problem for a few days. I’m mentioning this only because of my proximity to the Junction and the overlapping time (evening) and dates. Anyhow, I am doing what I should have done many months ago and getting rid of Qwest DSL. Thursday ComCast is coming to hook me up.

AlParticipantYes, we have the same problem. We thought it was due to high volumes of users in the evening when people return home from work, but as you’ve done the research…that doesn’t look like the problem.

cjboffoliParticipantAl: High volumes wouldn’t explain why speeds are fine on weekend days and why it is slow at 11pm on a Sunday night.

MrJTMemberWe have been having connectivity issues with our Qwest DSL also. To top it off, our primary phone line (the one with the DSL does not work properly either. With the customer service that I have seen so far there seems to be little hope of getting either issue resolved anytime soon.

cjboffoliParticipantWell after 4 fruitless calls to Qwest that were routed to Indian call centers staffed with people who, how shall we say, are not really empowered to diagnose and remedy problems, I asked to be escalated to local Qwest tech support. Within about five minutes the local technicians told me that they indeed found something amiss in the way my service was being routed. There apparently was a problem with the “gateway” so they moved my line to a new gateway and my DSL service is rocketing along once again.
