My husband and I have been looking at West Seattle real estate for about a week and are feeling discouraged that we’re going to find our dream home here. So, the discussion of moving to Port Orchard has ensued and we’re seriously considering it. I’d love input from any Port Orchard-to-Seattle commuters, or those that know of folks that do. How’s the commute? Do you get sick of the ferry? Is it crazy expensive for a car and passenger every day? Do you love it over there? Are we crazy to consider this and leave our lovely West Seattle? Any comments would be greatly appreciated!

A lot of people do it. The fellow sitting across from me at work is one of them. As for the expense – that’s just a matter of going to the website and figuring it out. The additional commuting time is a whole other matter though.

My thought? Unless you have a strong connection to Port Orchard, that commute is gonna get old real fast.

Why not Vashon? At least you’d get the option of the downtown passenger ferry.

For over 2 years we looked at properties in Port Orchard, Manchester, Poulsbo, Southworth and Burley and decided to stay in West Seattle. The ferry commute was too much for my husband, and the fact that hospitals are not close like here in Seattle. Also the extra unkeep of 2 to 7 acres was too much for us.

Hi, We are Port Townsend commuters, (the other West Seattle). We love it so much in PT but can’t seem to leave our Native West Seattle. The ferry isn’t bad off season. But during the late spring, and summer, no way would we take the ferry, Super long lines, way faster to drive around.

Thanks for the input! After long thought we are going to stick to West Seattle – I think the ferry would get old fast and I’d miss being close to everything!

I was going to add, two of my friends live in Port Orchard and until recently both commuted to downtown Seattle (since then, one has decided to stay home to raise their kid). They really like it and enjoy the ferry ride. I don’t think they take the car, though; they live near the ferry terminal on the other side and catch a bus at Fauntleroy.
