Fifty dogs in a barn…being bred to sell. This is called a puppy mill. This puppy mill is only the tip of the iceberg of these inhumane ‘businesses’ in Washington State.

Big thank you to Whatcom Humane Society and the various rescue groups that accepted these dogs, including Motley Zoo. http://motleyzoo.org/2012/tales-from-the-zoo/

When you want to add a furry friend to your family, please, please adopt…don’t shop. Many of the puppies and kittens in the pet stores or from ‘breeders’ were raised in conditions like these dogs. Vote with you money…adopt.

FF, I routinely search Craigslist for pet ads, which are prohibited on CL but show up with alarming frequency anyway. A few days ago my search revealed dozens and dozens of pets – mostly dogs – for sale. I’d just like to remind people to take a minute while you’re perusing Craig’s List and flag off these ads. Many of them are for animals out of puppy mills, others just seem to be trying to turn a quick and easy buck at the expense of innocent animals. There are a shocking number of pit bulls for sale or stud, despite the fact that pits are the most likely dog to end up abandoned. The other day I saw some up for barter – for guns.

    Just what we need.

anonyme, thank you for this reminder. Yes, do flag these ads. Craiglist has started removing ‘animals for sale’ (thanks to a lot of rescue groups alerting them to the dangers of such ads).

    Hey Teri! Two things:

    1) Is the breeding business in WA currently regulated at all?

    2) Can you explain to us what kind of new laws you’d like to see?

anonyme, does CL have some kind of warning screen about pet ads?

They’ve got those screens for scams; seems like it would be a good idea for pet-for-sale ads, too. Just sayin’.

DBP,if you search any category on CL there are a number of warnings that appear at the top of the page. One of them states “please flag pet sales”. More detailed information is also available in several other areas of CL, but more difficult to find.

Many of the people posting pet sales are fully aware that they are prohibited, and find ways to dance around the rules. For example, they’ll ask for a “re-homing fee”, or try to hide the fact that it’s a pet sale in other ways.

Even though your legal question was directed to Teri, I can tell you that I’d like to see a) mandatory neutering of all pets b) licensing required for ANY and ALL pet breeding. This was tried a number of years ago and didn’t pass due to heavy lobbying by pet supermarkets. I think it might stand a better chance now, given that tax-supported shelters are so strapped for support. Those opposed should also consider the fact that these backyard breeders are also not paying taxes on their under the table earnings, thus compounding the problem of pet overpopulation with underfunded animal welfare programs.

DBP breeding is regulated in Washington, we actually rank in the top 5 according to HSUS. We are ranked high “because of [our] strong standards of care, regulation of both small and large commercial breeding facilities, and consumer protections.”

If you are interested in the actual regulations, here they are http://apps.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=16.52.310.

I think a lot of times the problem isn’t the laws, but the amount of people enforcing the laws. I don’t know much about Washington, but I know in Colorado there were 3 inspectors assigned for the entire state of Colorado, this included 1,800 licensed facilities.

Thanks, DR. I’ll look into it.

HH, we’re not just trying to get the bad guys to change their ways. We’re looking to create a society in which it’s much harder for the bad guys to exist. A society in which people take more responsibility for animals generally, including making the effort to research where the puppies at the pet store come from.

Even if we had ten times the enforcement, it’s still gonna take a lot of good old-fashioned public awareness work to lick this one.

Stricter breeding laws for humans would also be beneficial.

People spit kids out because the government gives them more money for every illegitimate baby that they bring into this world. That’s their ticket to getting money.
