jwwsParticipantThe weather is fine and it’s time for the West Seattle Garden Tour!
Please join us to celebrate the 16th year of the West Seattle Garden Tour on next Sunday, July 18. This year’s tour features an eclectic mix of seven residential gardens including a bird sanctuary, a tree-filled garden, a “Disneyesque” garden of whimsy and, as an added bonus, the South Seattle Community College Arboretum. In addition, we are pleased to welcome fellow West Seattle Resident Willi Galloway as our guest lecturer. Willi will present a noontime lecture at South Seattle Community College, the topic of which is “Creating a Beautiful and Productive Kitchen Garden”.
As a non-profit organization, the WSGT donates all net proceeds from the Tour to Seattle-based non-profit organizations that promote horticultural, educational, or artistic endeavors. This year’s beneficiaries include Seattle Tilth, ArtsWest, Highland Park Elementary School, South Seattle Community College Arboretum and Duwamish Long House and Cultural Center.
Tickets for the tour are $15, which includes lecture admission, (children under 12 are free). Tickets are available throughout the Seattle metro area and on-line at http://www.brownpapertickets.com.
But there’s more! This year, all West Seattle Garden Tour ticket holders can sample culinary delights produced by SSCC students for free between 1:00 and 2:30 pm, immediately following the lecture. Simply present your ticket booklet for admission to the tasting. SSCC will showcase their student’s culinary efforts by providing small samples of different chocolates, confections and pastries, cheese and wine products. Quantity is limited and you must be 21 years of age to sample the wines.
We also have a number of great raffle items, including a natural stone bench from Marenakos!
For photos and additional information about the gardens, beneficiaries, sponsors, lecture, tasting and raffle items, visit our website: http://www.westseattlegardentour.com.

sam-cParticipant“as an added bonus, the South Seattle Community College Arboretum”
can you clarify the added bonus ? are you referring to the lectures?
the lecture definitely sounds like a bonus, the talks we went to during last spring’s (?) summer (?) edible garden event at SSCC were good. we learned so much.
I wasn’t sure what the ‘added bonus’ was though, we walk to and enjoy the SSCC arboretum frequently. it’s great !

The bonus is that the Arboretum is closed to the public on the day of the Tour – open as a WSGT garden and SSCC and WSGT volunteers will be available to answer questions about the garden, plus the noon lecture featuring West Seattle resident and organic gardener Willi Galloway will be there followed by a wine/cheese/confection tasting hosted by SSCC culinary arts students for WSGT ticket holders only – they are pulling out all the stops for us and our beneficiaries this year so PLEASE join us for one of our best garden tours to date!!

PibalParticipantGo WSGT!
I would like to add a shameless plug for the Arboretum at South Seattle Community College. It’s a jewel that escaped my attention until my wife educated me about both its history and its many facets. This is the place that Helen Sutton, among many others started, and is maintained in part by a volunteer maintenance group known as the Co-Horts (a nice play on words and short for co-horticulturalists).
Co-Hort activities take place on the second Saturday of every month and kick off about 9:00 AM for a few hours of garden fun and a free lunch, courtesy of the college’s Dean and the school’s culinary program.
If you hear the Arboretum calling you, docent training will be held at the LHO Building adjacent to the eastern edge of the Arboretum on Tuesday night/July 13th at 6:00 PM for all interested. Check it out and get a free tour!
I know those that work and volunteer at the Arboretum are thrilled to have been invited by the West Seattle Garden Tour to join the prestigious group! It’ll be fun!
For more information, check the Arboretum out on Facebook…

sam-cParticipantbump- I finally convinced my husband to go* and it sounds like he’s seen 4 great gardens already.
* he likes gardening more than I, and wanted him to go get ideas and talk gardening with people other than myself, cause I kinda stop listening after the first 5 minutes.

yeah-meParticipantThis year’s tour was excellent. They were all really nice gardens — but four were truly exceptional. I was inspired!
