KenParticipantI shop at big box retail stores. I choose Costco instead of Walmart since so far the founders of Costco have ignored the WSJ editorial pages condemnation of them for paying a living wage, holding markup to a specific percentage, and paying their vendors and suppliers on time.
Snobbish condescension? I would be interested in your reasoning for that term.
Sure I might show a bit of snobbish condescension but the parody is satire and as such uses the “over the top” method of illustrating the absurdity of similar statements we see from the right every day.
An example is the Scalia dissent from the supremes yesterday where he uses the “security theater” at airports and the barricades around the capitol building as proof that fear of terrorism is scary enough to suspend the writ of habeas corpus that has been a fundamental part of the rule of law since long before the revolutionary war.
BTW: others may disagree but I am not really interested in broadening “my” coalition to include more blue dogs and indies.

JeffroMemberRe the Prager video: I love how all of the sudden the Conservative intellectuals have discovered humanitarianism. “Why, if we leave, it would be genocide”. This ignores the fact that genocide, or as the white house calls it, sectarian violence, is already happening, ethnic cleansing has already happened, torture is still happening, whether we’re there or not. Things have been going so bad there, they could not possibly get any worse with us leaving. The noble thing to do would be for us to leave, because at least then it won’t be done under our name. Also, shouting something does not make it more true.
Re the “I’m voting Republican” parody ad, that’s the exact kind of snobbish condescension that makes it hard for people to switch to the dems. Why, no self-respecting dem would be caught dead shopping at a big-box retail store! Good luck broadening your coalition with that.
June 13, 2008 at 4:42 pm #627753In reply to: Is a Yield sign THAT confusing?
charlabobParticipantIt really is about bad drivers…..not ignorance of signs.
Along with the phenomenon of ignoring yield signs, we have the phenomenon of pretending one has a yield sign when one doesn’t. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve yielded properly, only to have someone coming from the non-yield direction stop and sit absolutely still, waiting for me to pull out in front of hir(m). If you have the right of way, and someone yields to you, take the damned right of way and go.
I haven’t been able to figure out if this is a warped instance of Seattle nice or just strange driving behavior. Either way, it just results in gridlock — even if there are only two cars involved.

KayleighMember“This is directed at the handful of you out there that can understand this video.”
This implies that only people who agree with you and Prager have valid points of view, or are smart enough to “understand.” Also, there’s nothing in anyone’s opinion that’s correct or incorrect. Facts are correct or incorrect. Opinions are supported with facts (or not) but can’t be factually incorrect.
I understand Prager perfectly; I just disagree with him most of the time. He doesn’t see leftist the way I see us; he has his interpreation of us, which is through a very conservative/religious lens. That lens isn’t the “correct” one to see the world. It’s one of many.
You can’t get more hateful than Michael Savage. You really can’t. Either the right wing blowhards in the public eye hate liberals (or they hate “fill in the blank with the Demon of the Day”), or they do a good impersonation of it.

June 13, 2008 at 4:27 pm #627662keleesoMemberI have had dogs my whole life and I believe they should be kept on leash unless they are in a designated off-leash area. I was once walking my sister’s greyhound and my husky, when an off-leash dog came running up – I hollered to the owner to please put her dog on leash and she scowled at me and ignored me. About that time the greyhound took off to meet the off-leash dog -the problem was she was on her extend-o-leash and I wasn’t smart enough or quick enough to drop the leash so the greyhound got whiplash as she got to the end of the leash and I felt like my arm was going to be pulled off my body. After that, I was afraid that arm was going to be 2 or 3 inches longer than the other one!
June 13, 2008 at 4:25 pm #627661walfredoMemberAlki- I guess I’m misunderstanding… To me, even if you call the non-emergency police number to report someone going 35 in a 30 mph, you are being a bit too proactive.
I am a firm believer that most laws have a lot of gray area, and are not always wise. But I do fully understand that anytime you disobey the law as written you take a risk.
I guess my point is to plead to the “activist” dog patrol folks on here, to at least use some discretion with there activism. Not every case is the same, and the overwhelming majority of owners do a good job controlling there pets, and looking after them whether on or off leash… Those whose are out of control, and disrupting others, or worse threatening them should be reported.
And I totally agree with New Resident, anyone who has seen a dog run on a sandy beach, they definitely go hand in hand. If California and Hawaii or okay with there beaches having dogs, Seattle seems a bit uptight to me…

FranciParticipantI’ve noticed lately in and out of West Seattle a new trend. In WS it was at 35th & Morgan, lots of traffic. A car stopped at the red light, heading east on Morgan, there was a minor break in cross traffic, he just proceeded to cross the road against the red light. He also had to pull into the right hand lane to get around the car(s)in front of him to cross 35th.. I’ve seen this behaviour at a light near my office too.
Since when have red lights become stop and go?

TheHouseMemberKayleigh, your post is completely incorrect and a great example of my statement” ….liberals believe that anyone that disagrees with them have hatred towards them”.
I have much more important things to do with my life besides sit around and “hate” people on this blog. I completely disagree with many of you and think that your reasoning is severely flawed BUT I DON’T hate you.
There is one exception….when you start calling me a racist and homophobic with absolutely no proof to base the accusations on, it makes it kind of hard to like you (not talking about you Kayleigh).
Ken, I stated above that I don’t agree with Prager 100% of the time. He still can articulate the implications of leftist thought better than anyone else I’ve ever heard.
June 13, 2008 at 3:51 pm #627660AlkiKmacParticipantWalfredo – you are misreading. The suggestion to call 911 is if you’re in immediate danger. For example, when an off-leash pit bull recently attacked Myrtle, our Shar-Pei, while being walked on a leash in Leavenworth. (Yes, the PetFest winner) Otherwise, it’s completely reasonable to report off-leash dogs to Animal Control, which IS NOT 911.
I’m a life long dog owner and former professional pet sitter. To think the law should only apply sometimes is ignorant and and dangerous.

AnonymousInactiveTotally agree Jen, it’s like people just blow through uncontrolled intersections and also don’t yield. Because I see this so often, I approach intersections cautiously often to the frustration of the driver behind me. For example, I slow down when I approach an intersection that does not have a circle or yield or stop sign because the person on my left may not realize that they need to yield to the person on the right. Good topic. It really pisses me off.
Off topic a bit but what really pisses me off are the jaywalking peds who just step out infront of you with no notice and then scowl at you because you had to slam on your brakes. People need to wake up and realize that they will loose to a car no matter who has the right of way.

KenParticipantThanks for the small dose of Prager House.
For those who can stand “teh stupid” in larger doses and mixed with denied racism and every canard of the wingnuts since the attempted fascist coup in 1933, here is the source of concentrated Prager. Be sure to wash your hands afterward.

charlabobParticipantPrager is still a little bitter because his buddy, Abramaoff, got caught. Before that, they made a lovely team.
June 13, 2008 at 12:56 pm #627659littlebrowndogParticipantMy 19 pound, 15 1/4″ tall Sheltie will snarl and snap at any “don’t worry, he’s friendly” dog that comes running up to him. That easily can elicit a hostile or aggressive response from that “friendly” dog. My dog is a well-trained service dog who responds in a completely appropriate manner when he does that. He is not normally a snappy dog; each weekend at agility trials he is around a couple of hundred other dogs, all on leash and well-controlled and often only 6-12 inches from him, and there is not a single growl or snap. Woe unto the person whose “don’t worry, he’s friendly” dog ever harms mine, as there is a $1000 fine for harming a service dog and believe me, that will happen plus vet fees plus any other legal recourse I can avail myself of. Don’t get me wrong, I love dogs. I tolerate but watch very cautiously off-leash dogs that do not approach. While on walks I often meet and greet other on-leash dogs. To exercise our dogs off-leash a couple of times a week we drive to Auburn to a dog ranch so they can run free in their 20 acres of fields.

KayleighMemberKen, loved the Republican video.
House, you express hate toward liberals and you know it. The right in general can be incredibly cruel and nasty to people on the left. Limbaugh, Coulter, Michelle Malkin, Michael Savage…purveyors of hate, all of them.
But the tide is turning,I think. America is starting to see the neo-cons have little to offer other than fear and hate.

BobMemberCombines an attractive idea with some pr0gramming skillz, but so far there’s been no activity in building good data to go with it. The data quality was remarkably poor last year and it’s still just as awful now. Still, I’d say it’s a cute idea and nice looking student work.
But the ideas and programming are the easy, cheap high-concept part. The vast sprawling morass of data entry, maintenance and quality control is the hard and expensive low-tech part.
So, good luck with the economics of expanding this to 40 cities if you can’t afford get the data done for one town in a year’s time.
June 13, 2008 at 6:36 am #627658guidosmomMemberKen, you are SO right, there is really no dog who can be under 100% total voice control at any time, which is why I say I have no problem with a dog that can do this… since there is no such dog, or EXTREMELY rare.
I also have a horse that I keep very close to West Seattle. While she’s not in the city exactly, yshe is still in a fairly well populated area that is could be considered West Seattle (near the mounted police facility). I can’t even begin to tell you how many times dogs have wondered onto the property and chased the horses, or cats or chicken. When I’ve ridden my horse through the neighborhood to the trails at Westcrest in the past, I’ve been chased many times by dog who “are friendly, don’t worry.” My horse kicks out at the dogs as they bite at her feed, and I am sure could easily kill any one of them. She could care less if they are “friendly”, if they are biting at her, she will kick them.
June 13, 2008 at 6:26 am #627722In reply to: Yarn for Knitting?
ShibaguyzMemberI knit a lot as well and the two yarn stores where the majority of my yarns come from are the Yarn Gallery here in WS and Tricoter at 3121 E Madison St. Tricoter was a sentimental favorite because it’s where I used to get my “fu-fu” yarn when we lived on Capitol Hill. I do have to say though that the Yarn Gallery here in WS has made it so I don’t have to go anywhere else for a great selection of fun yarns and really friendly staff.
Of course, for huge projects, it’s always my choice to go to Michael’s. Probably if your mom is a regular knitter she already has a lot of “ordinary” yarn.
Regarding Yarn Gallery, right at the front counter, they have some GREAT hand-spun yarns that are sold for a good cause. I love to saturation of the colors and the quality of the yarn. Might be a fun thing for her to add to her collection. I haven’t even decided what to do with mine and I have several hanks of it.
June 13, 2008 at 5:23 am #627657miwsParticipantThe problem with the thinking “let’s just let dogs run off-leash, and then if there IS a problem, deal with it at that time”, is that by the time that “problem” occurs, somebody’s leashed dog may be severly injured or dead, after being attaked by the off leash dog.
.
By then, it’s too late to just simply “deal with it”, because the leashed dog will have a possibly painful recovery, or, obviously, no recovery at all, if dead.
.

TheHouseMemberGranted, Dennis Prager is an expert on religious rhetoric but I disagree with your statement above that he’s thumping a bible on this one and your statement about liberals.
Liberals don’t hate people that hate evil…..liberals believe that anyone that disagrees with them have hatred towards them.
June 13, 2008 at 5:04 am #627608In reply to: Reasons to vote Republican – youtube video
AnonymousInactiveHouse, I’m disappointed. I rarely agree with your methods, but I can usually count on you to provoke thought, or at least a lively controversial debate.
This video is nothing more than a bad sermon. I expected to see him thumping a bible. So much religious subtext it was hard for me to sit through it. Same tired song. Only conservatives want to do anything about the EVIL in the world. Liberals hate people who hate EVIL, but could care less about EVIL itself.
So we just want a free for all for terrorists? Is that the opinion? What a simplified, incorrect, extreme over generalization. I’m surprised you buy into this or him in general when he’s coming from such a religious conservative point of view.
June 13, 2008 at 4:39 am #627654JayDeeParticipantSo I am watching my bosses’ Labrador/Dachshund mix dog while they are on vacation for two weeks. The dog is a little skitzy, but OK if you know her. I take her for walks (ok, sniffs) because she likes walks — on leash; what dog doesn’t? She likes other dogs but only in the abstract–smelling their presence. If we are walking, we cross the road when other leashed dogs approach. So good, so far.
So we go to Alki Mail for an errand and are wandering through the hood on the way home–Admiral isn’t that exciting for a dog walk. We come upon a homeowner walking his unleashed Rottwieler and carrying a 6 month old baby in his arms. He reassures me as the large dog comes near: “Oh, don’t worry, he’s friendly…” Well, the unleashed Rott might be, but my temporary leashed dog is not. The Rott comes sniffing around and my dog goes trembley and shakey and snaps, trying to bite the other dog.
Fortunately, it works out–we separate the dogs, and the “dad” doesn’t drop the kid or get bit by either dog.
I pet the bosses’ dog a couple hundred feet away and her heart is going like 120 beats a minute. So we sit down (still on leash) and calm off, with me reassuring her that she is OK.
I just think of all the bad outcomes that could’ve happened because one ignorant owner/dad says “It’s OK, he’s friendly…” without being troubled to walk his dog on a leash…ummm…like the law requires, oh, and with a helpless baby in his arms…
You don’t even have to stretch your imagination.
June 13, 2008 at 4:35 am #627653AnonymousInactiveIrukandji – There is a guy who “walks” his dog up and down our street almost everyday
I’m surprised this dog is still alive!
Basically, the human is on a bike, and the dog does the same thing that you witnessed with the car. He’s running around the bike, running into traffic, running into people…. it’s so ridiculous!
We are actually convinced that the owner of this dog is trying to kill it. Now that I have that number, I will definitely be sure to use it!!!
