  • Middle school is a tough time for youth. This time of transition is filled with multiple changes, increased responsibility, increased peer pressure, lack of motivation and puberty. This is also when youth are building their self-esteem and their confidence. Many students are going through these changes alone, as they aren’t trusting their parents/guardians with as much, yet this is when they love friends and need the most authentic support.
Here is where you step in. As a volunteer mentor, you are that friend and support system. Through spending time together, having fun and enjoying each other, your student will become more confident and comfortable in their own skin. Our youth will also be exposed to your life and experiences, which many times are different than those in their home life. As a mentor, you will spend time with your youth twice a month. Even if you are busy, if you have a free 4 hours a month, you can make a difference.
A key part of our program is building a community for our youth, so along with the one-on-one time spent with you, everyone attends monthly program sponsored outings. While these outings seem just to be fun outings, they have a large learning component, such as discussions about body image, bullying, communication, and other topics that middle school youth are experiencing. These outings are scheduled once a month, and vary in location and day to give variety to the group and scheduling.
If you think back to your middle school experience, how would you have benefited from a mentor? Sign up for more information and you could give a middle school youth the love, support, and friendship they need.

Amber, the masseuse at Conscious Choice Chiropractic, is one of the very best deep tissue massage therapists I’ve ever been to, and I’ve been to a lot of massage therapists over the years. She is very skilled and knows what she’s doing. She helped me recover from whiplash and muscle spasms; uses the right amount of pressure for each muscle group. She has a massage room in the Chiropractor’s office and takes insurance. Patrick Hunter, the chiropractor there, is good as well.

I live off 12th and Myrtle by the Ridgeview park and when I got up this morning I came to notice my car door’s were open. I soon realized my car had been torn apart by someone(s) during the evening. Nothing was taken as my car has been a target for things of the nature in the past by some unfortunate strike of fate so I quickly learned to keep nothing of value in there and must have been too tired from my Monday I didn’t realize I had not locked my car when I got home. I wanted to share my experience because I lived in this neighborhood for about 2 years and nothing of the nature has happened to me before and in case anyone else saw something or had a similar one in the area.

My street is very crowded as well. if that blocked spot is keeping me from parking on my street I like to think I would try the friendly route, commiserate with my neighbor about our shared situation, and how frustrating it is.

More likely I would stop my car, lift the containers onto the sidewalk and proceed to park my car. She knows what she is doing isn’t legal. We’re all in the same crowded boat so maybe it doesn’t have to be conflict. More ‘hey I know this sucks and I need a place to park too.

About a week ago I noticed a fellow bringing a big vat of meat grease, maybe a grease trap from a grill, and dumping the whole thing into the sewer drain at the edge of 55th and the alley there before it curves around and joins Lander, near Alki. We live on the ridge above and just happened to see him do this through the trees, but we were too far away to get his attention.

A little later we went down to check and sure enough, there was icky grease with meat bits on the top of that manhole cover. The grease was already in Puget Sound by then.

Today I walked down there and saw that someone had just dumped an entire metal (heavy) fire pit into the bushes down there on my property. I pulled it out and set it on the curb. I believe the city will take that kind of metal with recycling. But I know for sure it’s not OK to dump anything, much less something huge and an eyesore, onto either public greenbelt land or someone else’s property.

I bring this up because I don’t really know what the remedies are. Assuming I could have talked to this guy dumping human food grease directly into the sewer, what could I have told him were the alternatives for disposing that? I actually think you could put it into your compost bin, right?

And as for dumping of giant pieces of garbage….arrgh. How do you all handle that? Over the years we have posted :”No dumping/tresspassing” signs but it’s a big wedge of land there along 55th. Some is greenbelt/wildlife preserve and some has been for sale forever and if you’re looking to ditch something with no one watching I suppose it looks like you can.

But the bottom line is, it’s not ok to dump your stuff, liquid or solid, on land that’s not yours or straight into our water system.

Argh! I’d love any suggestions any of you might have on how to handle this kind of thing.

    Thank you!

A friend of mine noticed M-T on California Ave the other day, crying. My friend told me she couldn’t get to her in traffic and lack of parking but wondered what was going on and if there was (is) anything our community can do to help. I looked up this thread and see ideas but it doesn’t seem like any changes have been made in the last couple of years. So I would like to ask if anyone has updated information about this woman? Would she accept shelter if shelter could be built or provided somewhere? Would it be possible to find or build a small place for her where she could store her things and sleep securely at night? If she would accept such a thing, could we set up a funding site for donating to provide shelter? Would it be possible for this community to change the life of one person in need? I would like to try, if anyone knows more about what she will accept and/or need. Thanks for any information anyone might have.
