Neighbors…once again I’m reaching out as a volunteer on behalf of the West Seattle Clothesline (https://westseattlefoodbank.org/clothesline/). We’ve been seeing a gradual increase in the number of families stopping by and are currently averaging about 20 families/day! Since we want to make sure we have enough offerings to meet the needs of all our clients, please consider donating now! In particular, we are in desperate need of Men’s clothing, especially shirts (all types…dress, polo, tee), pants/shorts, sweatshirts/hoodies/sweaters, and shoes/sneakers. Additionally, we can use a new influx of bedding and towels.

As you consider donating items, please make sure your donations are in good shape (i.e. you would still wear or use…but perhaps don’t fit, have outgrown the style, or just cleaning out your closets)! It would be ideal if your donations were bagged in garbage/plastic bags that can be closed. This helps us keep them clean and dry.
The Clothesline is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10am – 1pm, and it is located at 4425 41st Ave SW, Seattle WA. A large parking lot is available.

Thank you… thank you…thank you. The generosity of our West Seattle neighbors has always reinforced the Food Bank’s motto of Neighbors Helping Neighbors! With gratitude and appreciation, Meade Thayer

Living close to West Seattle High School isn’t unpleasant. There’s traffic in the morning and release time. The students can go off campus for lunch. During that time the local stores and eateries are busy. Same is true after school. There’s no obnoxious noise outside of the usual traffic. All in all, I’d say they’re good neighbors.

Thanks CarDriver! That all makes sense. Are you, or is anyone, familiar with this church specifically? Because I was reading that it functions a bit like a community center. So I’m wondering if the parking and foot traffic is going to be 7 days a week and not just Sundays.

Parking around churches will be tough on Sunday’s or when there’s an event there. Majority of people going will drive. Schools will have employees coming and parking early and-especially if it’s raining a LOT of parents driving their kids to school or driving to come pick them up. One funny school story is from the Seattle Times. Many years ago due to parents and neighbors’ complaints about speeders around schools SPD did emphasis patrols for a week around schools. Final tally: 75% of the speeding tickets were to parents dropping off or coming to pick up their kids. Noise: unless you live right next door shouldn’t be any noise around churches. If you live by Genesee’s playfield or Hiawatha there’ll be noise when the kids are out playing otherwise shouldn’t be much more than normal noise.

Hello, my family and I are house hunting in West Seattle. I’d love to hear people’s experiences of living next to schools and churches. Do they make for good or bad neighbors? What are some of the issues you’ve encountered? I’m specifically looking at houses in the vicinity of the following:

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints

    Genesee Hill Elementary

    West Seattle High School

If you live near any of these or have some insights into the noise and traffic patterns around these spots would very much appreciate your thoughts!

Twice I’ve almost been hit by people heading west and making the slight left turn onto Erskine. I think they think they are going straight and don’t need to yield to traffic continuing east on Edmonds or turning right onto California.

Whine: do I want to boycott QFC? Not at all. I was merely suggesting that avenue of action for Genebean, should Genebean want to act in addition to complaining.

(Frankly I think it’s weird when people leap to the defense of companies with CEOs making tens of millions of dollars PER YEAR, companies that, as others have pointed out, choose not to bother with shoplifters (for whatever reasons), but, hey, everyone’s gotta have a hobby, right?)

To be honest, I didn’t know what was going on until they were at the door and I wasn’t in a position to intervene. They also said to stay back. I could see what was happening, but not at a position to jump in. Sorry. I wish I could have done more.

So you want to boycott the company until they make a policy that puts their employees at risk of being shot, stabbed or otherwise harmed? Those policies are there for a reason – if employees have to act as law enforcement officers then they’d need to get paid a lot more money. There would also need to be a lot of training to ensure they handle confrontations properly. Sadly, it’s cheaper to lose a few steaks than it is to deal with lawsuits from grieving employee families after a shoplifting incident goes south.

You should take a stance and boycott that chain of stores until corporate changes their policy. As others have pointed out, the hands-off policy is coming from headquarters–you anonymously ranting about our local community won’t do much!

I worked at that QFC and the company would fire you even if you said anything to them. Those employees can still get terminated. I remember watching a shoplifter bag over $300 in meat in the wide open. Then leave the store, return load up again, leave and return for a 3rd time. Almost $700 worth of meat was stolen in about 3 hours by the same person. I of course told management and they were indifferent about the situation. Not for personal reasons, but because their hands are tied with corporate policy. Now here is why the company will not stop theft. Believe it or not they actually make money when people steal through insurance and price increases. There are enough honest people who will pay for their groceries with price hikes vs the damage from shoplifters.

There is a term for having garbage and no container. It’s called “pack it out” Dog owners could carry until they come upon a garbage container or take it home and put in their garbage. Reality is that their laziness overcomes common courtesy and besides they’re just sure their mommy will come pick up after them.

At 11:30 am today, a man walked into the QFC store on Alaska Street, took two CASES of beer and started to walk out. Two employees attempted to ASK him to put the beer back as he attempted to leave the store without paying. They did not touch him but continued to request that he not steal the beer. He left one case and took the other. I asked the employee, why they didn’t stop him and was told. “WE are not to touch anyone shoplifting or we will be fired from our job”.
What has happened to our community? As I have often said, when you stop holding people accountable to the small infractions, then the big infractions become normalized. We need to take our community back from this theft. It still is illegal and only raises the cost of food for all of us.
