Someone asked a few weeks ago here and someone has even taken it to Craigslist. I prepaid a bunch of haircuts with them and I’m very upset too.

    jan: you forgot “arrogant.”

when the “leave it to beaver” crowd controls the rhetoric, it’s difficult to understand what it must be like to grow up dirt poor; to have minimal parental guidance; to have to resort to petty crime to make ends meet; and to have cops, judges, and the rest of the country telling you, “just get a job and pull yourself up by your bootstraps.”

OP is right. this conversation is dysfunctional.

One pattern I’ve observed is where people with a social-progress cause advocate for that cause without regard for the methods. “Ends justify the means” is loaded language, but that’s what it amounts to.

Perhaps one source of disagreement lies with attitudes toward a Cause. I absolutely do not agree that the (any) cause has that sort of primacy. To those starting with different beliefs, it’s no wonder we disagree.

Actually, I know a man who has lived two blocks from Roxbury (so he actually does live right next to White Center) since the 60’s who is so racist he won’t even let a black kid mow his lawn, let alone come inside his house. No, I definitely don’t think he wrote that letter though.

This whole thing breaks down pretty easy to me. I am a white male in my 30s.

Do you believe there is racial injustice in this country? I think this is pretty obvious but I know many disagree. If you don’t I would think you should vary your news sources and broaden your spectrum.

If you do acknowledge that there is racial injustice, then who am I as a white person to judge how others choose to protest this? What would you have them do? They block traffic, you complain, they write articles, you complain, they protest peacefully, you complain. The problem is those who are angry over this want the issue confined to people complaining in their own living rooms, and away from inconveniencing you. Social progress cannot be made that way.

I have never been a Kaepernick fan as a football player, but his protest has started a conversation in all aspects of media, sports, and society. Progress.

Give it up, Jan. Heckling a public figure is fair play. See also Randy Johnson’s mullet, or Donald Trump.

Reason for what’s happening? All I said was that he’s not playing.

And ‘ignorant’. What knowledge did I lack? I’d guess you meant something else.

Really, he was suited up to play a sport requiring a helmet, with hair visibly huger than the outside dimensions of the helmet. A spiky Mohawk would have been equally silly.

Hi mtnfreak, sorry I can’t recommend someone but just wanted to mention that sometimes the contractor has suppliers that they deal with. I went with the packaged doors that my contractor suggested and I think I should have gone with better quality. Just thought I’d mention it. If you find the doors (and windows) you want they might suggest a contractor. Good luck

    A few comments;

    1) I just love these completely incoherent rants with random capitalization. For those of you that are foaming at the mouth and screaming at the computer “grammar is for leftist liberal pinko swine!” I say “What?”

    2) I read a lot of different forums ranging from electrical design and engineering, law and, of course, this gem. In no forum anywhere have I seen an entire political group so completely summed up as when an incoherent rightie breaks out lefty or libtard, frequently going on as to why we are just wrong but with no supportable evidence or attempt of such for their “point”.

    3) if that was a meeting I really need more of those in my life because the ones I seem to go to aren’t nearly as much fun.

Puget Sound Puppers LLC has an opening for a motivated candidate to join our team of compassionate and dedicated Professional Dog Walkers in West Seattle. Hours will average 10-20 hours per week once training is complete, depending on our scheduling needs. Ideal availability is between 10am and 4pm Monday through Friday.

The sort of people who join our team show a commitment to working with dogs and other pets for the long term, so experience is not necessarily required. However, we will only consider candidates who can demonstrate a level of dedication that matches ours.

Our pet care philosophy is grounded in positive and compassionate interactions with our furry clients, coupled with an understanding of what makes them tick. We treat them as individuals with their own particular needs and personalities, and we want like-minded people to support the vision of changing our world, one dog and one person at a time.

If you think you’d be a good fit, please email Jaime Volker (jaime.volker@gmail.com) with a cover letter, your resume, and the contact information for three professional references.

Important: You must be at least 18 years old, be able to work on your feet at least 4 hours per day, be able to safely lift at least 50lbs on a regular basis, have daily, reliable access to your own vehicle with proof of insurance, and own a smart phone capable of sending both email and text messages. All candidates will be asked to complete a separate application questionnaire and submit to a criminal background check before an official offer is made.

This person is obviously delusional, based on many of the things written here.

But as JanS pointed out, Pigeon Point (not ‘Pigeon hill’) is not really right next to White Center. Not that that REALLY matters in this person’s invalid points anyway. There are 2 other neighborhoods between Pigeon Point and White Center- at least maybe 3? Puget Ridge, Riverview and Highland Park…. All these neighborhoods are beautiful in their own way, the diversity, the people, the families. No hatred in any of them. Please and thank you.

We are looking for an entry level Warehouse Associate to work in PNTA’s warehouse. Your primary responsibility as a Warehouse Associate is general maintenance. This includes:

    Theatrical equipment quality control,
    Cable testing,
    Minor repairs,
    Listening and seeking to understand,
    Facilitating,
    Prioritizing,
    Problem-solving, and
Warehouse cleaning (sweeping, dusting, keeping benches stocked and clean).

As a Warehouse Associate, you work under the supervision of the Warehouse Manager and interact often not only with other staff throughout the company but occasionally also with customers.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Gear Knowledge. It’s really helpful if you have some experience in live event production, but it’s not a necessity. Regardless of prior experience, you must have a voracious appetite for new knowledge. You must be comfortable with your geeky side and eager to learn about new technologies and gear. If you have ever been called a “jack of all trades (with a cool head under fire)”, this is the position for you.

Inventory control. You are heads up enough to see when we have too much or too little of an item, and you let the Warehouse Manager know so that the problem can be addressed. You care that gear is in good repair and correctly stored between use.

Good working with your hands. You have a technical aptitude. If you have experience in carpentry and/or construction, you will succeed in the warehouse.

Miscellaneous projects. The Warehouse Manager will throw random, one-off projects at you.

    Other Duties:
    Assist in shipping, as directed.
Assist with periodic inventories, as needed.
Maintain a clean and safe work environment.

    Qualifications:
Must be able to stand, walk, bend and lift gear up to 50 lbs for the majority of an eight-hour workday.
Must have the ability to read and write English.
    Must be dependable and punctual.
Must be self-motivated and able to work independently.
Must be able to prioritize your workday according to multiple deadlines.
Must work well under pressure. When a rush job pops up, you handle it in a calm and timely manner, then immediately return to your regular workflow…even on busy days when rush jobs arise every 15 minutes.
A sense of humor is strongly recommended but not required.
    Prior production experience preferred.

This is not a position for the faint of heart. For those with enough strength and determination, there is room for advancement.

This is a full-time position starting at $12-$14/hour, DOE.

If we haven’t scared you off yet, submit a cover letter and resume to richardb@pnta.com.

The way I read the story was that she grew up in the house, so she is a long time resident. She was uncomfortable with someone she didn’t know organizing a rally. SPD is unable to take a report, and it could be dangerous for her to be a DYI sleuth. Someone she knows could be pranking her, or knew that there would be a reaction. Other notes may have been tossed unread by neighbors. Many possibilities. I see nothing in the main page story about the family attending the rally.

Hiya – looking for 1-2 companies that would be willing to handle a small project replacing a handful of windows and 2 external doors. I’ve contacted West Seattle Windows and Doors but would like to have a couple of other bids.

    Hello all,

I’m looking for a local electrician for a couple very small issues. I just need to replace a few outlets (one is dead, flipping the breaker does nothing, and adding USB power in a couple) and wiring a new one in our walk-in closet. Should be a very small job so looking for someone with low project minimums who also has enough time to easily fit in a small single day project like this.

    Thanks in advance!

I will allow that undoubtedly some BLM activists have said “white people are all racists” and to the extent that happens, I think it tends to inhibit dialogue and examination. That said, I appreciate that one of the tasks of BLM is to make people uncomfortable about the tolerance this nation has for systemic racism. That means very uncomfortable, unavoidably uncomfortable and all people—white, black, brown, yellow, whatever. I would much rather see BLM demonstrators challenging everyone to: Get Involved; Be Intolerant of Racism; Act Now; Wake Up People; Racism Hurts Everyone; etc. as well as advocate for specific national and local reforms.

Because racism is systemic, there are many ways it manifests, from active perpetuation to unconscious acceptance and ultimately to adaptation (the most telling sign of how effective any form of discrimination is). BLM has a lot of work to do in the black community as well as in challenging white America if we are going to ever push back and accomplish more results in overcoming the destructive legacy racism has had on this nation.

While of course a lot of that involves obvious discriminatory race issues, a lot also involves systemic, structural economic issues that affect everyone. Unfortunately the political dialogue in this country is so low that the latter point is not appreciated by many well-intended politicians, activists and ordinary citizens of all races. While I’m not very optimistic about making accomplishments in the short term, I believe we have to choose to work on it rather than allow it to continue.

BTW, a telephone survey is going on right now that strives to assess community attitudes about and experience with the SPD. Some of it concerns perceptions about racist behavior as well as general performance. Unfortunately it isn’t time specific—-like “in the past 12 months” which I think would be important to avoid carry over from the time leading up to and immediately following the DOJ consent decree. The other lacking element is there are no questions about the roll of the Police Officers Guild in defending racists cops and opposing the new contract which calls for more independent voices in oversight and accountability of police.

    JKB..

I am confused as to why you would cite evidence that is considered flawed and then reference the article I posted when #5 in that article comes to exactly the opposite conclusion?

In fact, the preponderance of the research cited in that article …as well as the preponderance of actual research… comes to exactly the opposite conclusion.

when you define the discussion to “white people are all racists” you limit the scope of available information… like the huge discussion currently happening about the militarization of police forces.. which btw.. when you combine it with the premise that blacks just commit that many more crimes.. another premise countered in that article by data… causes a lot of the localization of “problems”.. which btw isn’t as localized as you would think.

Are you forgetting that our local police are under scrutiny for exactly those “problems” ?

Those questions are being asked.. and answered.

I am all for educating yourself..
but watching the evening news is not likely to do the job unless of course you think our elections should be more like reality tv…

there are lots of good places to find accurate information about what the candidate’s actual records.. both voting records and statements of policy. Vote Smart is one very good option.

And are you competent to vote? That is, do you have any clear idea who/what you might be voting for?

No offense if you’re not – it’s difficult, especially in local races. The good news is that you have time to do something about it!

Yes, I do decline to vote in races where I have no idea. Even better is to go learn about the candidate/issue and vote because you do have an idea.

I would love to see the narrative defined otherwise. ‘Racist white cops slaughtering blacks’ is what I hear being protested, not what I propose to discuss.

Some time ago I dug through the data at the Guardian’s ‘thecounted’ project. One bit that surfaced is that racial disparities were very local. We have problems in hotspots, not overall.

Lately I’ve been seeing reports that police use of force correlates with criminal activity, and not with race once you break down by the situation. Try

http://mobile.nytimes.com/2016/07/12/upshot/surprising-new-evidence-shows-bias-in-police-use-of-force-but-not-in-shootings.html?0p19G=c which was #11 in the VanityFair piece you posted.

Bottom line is that I object to the knee jerk conclusion that white people are all racists. Which I’ve heard from BLM, in just those words. I think we should also look at police culture. Are they too enemy-focused, which works for the military but not for local police? Or do blacks just commit that many more crimes? If so, why is that?

More than anything, what I have a problem with is that you can’t ask those questions. It’s as if street protests define the truth and anything else is treated as inhuman. Yeah, I don’t care for how this discussion works.

you know what.. the argument you make is exactly the argument made about women’s lib.. in the late 70s.. and as a result women toned down their rhetoric.

although the national conversation about women’s equality had reached such critical mass that the ERA was passed in Congress.. when women followed the advice you give.. that critical mass stalled and it was never ratified.

I am thinking that is not a good outcome.

the squeaky wheel does get the grease.. and the louder it squeaks the more likely it is to be greased.

Please, take the time to read the article i posted.. it’s not a fluff opinion piece
