OK, so it took awhile to go through the register/password/DNA test to get logged into the forum, but it sure is great to be here.

Cruiser, I feel your pain, especially #3. I call it “giving me the hey”. If I let you in, especially in thick traffic and you’re yakking on your cell phone, all I ask is that you give me the hey. A tiny little wave in the rear view mirror, it’s not much. Just an acknowledgment that somebody saw you, realized you needed a break, and gave it to you, whether you deserved it or not. If you give me the hey, all is well in the world, the cosmic karma remains in balance. And we all need that this time of year, right? So a big “hey” to all you out in WSB land.

Just did a full Junction walk along California (not to the approval of my dog :) to check restaurant signs and basically everything is either closed or an unknown (meaning they didn’t have anything posted). I haven’t called any of the unknowns, but I’m assuming if they don’t say, they’re closed. Here’s the full list in case anyone has info on the ones w/o posted signs.<br>

    • Ama Ama: Unknown
    • Tom Young Kum: Closed
    • Yummy Teriyaki: Closed
    • Elliott Bay Brew Pub: Closed
    • Talarico’s: Unknown
    • Rocksport: Unknown (Forgot to check)
    • Cupcake Royale: Unknown
    • Jak’s: Closed
    • Matador: Unknown
    • Maharaja: Unknown
    • Garlic Jim’s: Unknown
    • Kamei: Unknown
    • Lee’s Asian: Unknown
    • Shadowland: Unknown
    • Shoefly: Closed
    • Pagliacci: Unknown (I turned south after Shoefly and forgot to check)
    • Bee’s: Unknown
    • Caper’s: Unknown
    • Azuma: Unknown
    • West 5: Closed (although open on C-Mas Eve)
    • Easy Street: Closed
    • Great Harvest: Closed
    • Poggie’s: OPEN at 5:00 PM, but I don’t think they serve food
    • Taqueria Guaymas: Unknown
    • Husky Deli: Unknown (although presumed closed b/c they are for other holidays such as Easter)
    • Mashiko’s: Unknown
    • Puerto Vallarta: Unknown
    • Bakery Nouveau: Closed

Sure, it would have been easier to just say “They’re all closed except for Poggie’s,” but you don’t realize how many restaurants we have on one street in a 2-block area until you look at each of them and try to commit them to memory. Looks like we may start a new Christmas tradition this year: Dim Sum in the ID followed by drinks at Poggie’s. :)

CMP, I’ve eaten at Ho-Win twice. It’s functional. Not the best, not the worst. I wouldn’t say to run there, but you could do worse.

I think my issue with chinese restaurants though is that chinese food in NYC/NJ is *very* different than chinese food here. I think I’m searching for something that doesn’t exist here, like good pastrami. So I tolerate it here and then when I’m back there I eat myself sick on it. :)

I had Southwest come out and quote for some repipe….$1600 for ten sweat joints on copper pipes. That’s $160 a joint!. I hired a retired plumber for the day who taught me how to solder and I did it myself:)

cruiser, #6 is the winner. heaven forbid you should ever actually tell the clerk what you couldn’t find! “I’m sorry you couldn’t find the low sodium capers, but can’t you see I’m really busy, and there are fourteen people in line behind you, and my performance is based on productivity, so please move through the line in 20 seconds, goodbye Mr. (looks at receipt) A, haveaniceday.”

My #1 pet peeve = drivers who amble along at 40, 45 mph in the left lane of a highway (I usually notice on I-90 over the pass) dum-de-dum without a care in the world. These people, have they never heard of the PASSING LANE?

joetheplumberseattle website or # is 206-285-2434. Had Beacon charge me $300 for a half hour job plus the cost of tool rental. Also billed me for the blade they used “in case” it breaks. It didn’t. I wanted to keep the blade on principle since I payed for it. Couldn’t, of course. Called Joe the next time and he talked me through the problem on the phone. Fixed it myself. Can’t tell you how much I appreciated his honesty that I didn’t really need him. Would not hesitate to call him for a real job.

Oh interesting. I have read the book sharing the same title and that sounds like it would have been interesting. Thanks for the post.

And BL, if you check back, you should be able to edit your profile. I just tested it with this profile (which is NOT the admin profile) and it worked … even changed my password. Thanks for pointing it out.

Any recommendations for a talented WS tailor?

I have a few suits that need to be altered. In a perfect world, I would also love to have a few custom garments made.

    Thanks!

I would also love to find such a person. In my experience the large plumbing outfits are just an incredible ripoff. Very poor service at incredibly high prices.

Being a former employee for 7 years at a big coffee company, I can tell you that either people go to a coffee place because it’s popular, close by or accustomed to drinking Folgers at home. I don’t say this to be snarky, but ask for just a shot of espresso or solo, next time you go into your favorite coffee place and taste just the espresso and then go to another place and taste theirs and see if you can then tell the difference. This is the best way. I would suggest a place that does not use automated machines (these make the espresso taste awful) that pulls the shots around 16-20 secs. How they roast their coffee and how often they clean their machines plays a big part in this too. Hope this helps!

I was at the Starbucks on 35th and Fauntleroy this afternoon in a long line of cars waiting for coffee. When I finally got to the head of the line, the barista said my coffee had been paid for by the car before me. So I paid for the car behind me. She told me the kindness had progressed through eight cars at that point. Pass it on.

OK BL – let us know – we have received another anomaly report of people who sign in here then not being able to post their distinct screen name when they comment on blog posts (it says “logged in” which it shouldn’t because we thought we had the databases separate) and instead turning up as “anonymous.” That’s why we’re calling it “beta” (but what was alpha? and then do we go to centauri?) — WSB

I think A LOT of Owen Wright at Wright Innovations and Design (licensed, bonded, etc.). He is a contractor you can count on showing up when he says he will. He and his crew do a great job and take pride in what they do. He has done work for several of my clients as well as: Bath remodel, Kitchen remodel, and structural repair to my home. He works mainly by referral so drop me a line if you are interested in interviewing him.

Hello – we had a plumber from one of the bigger companies come out and quote us a sky high price to do some work on our hot water heater. We have one of those feelings like we are about to be ripped off and we’re looking for a second opinion. Does anyone have a handyman or local plumber they trust that they could recommend? Thank you so much!

    Hi,

I would like to have a one-car stand-alone garage built on my property. Any recommendations for contractors who do this kind of work?

    Thanks!
