As part of my work with the American Lung Association (ALA), we are launching an online photo contest on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. It’s aligned with the ALA’s LUNG FORCE campaign which works to raise awareness of lung cancer and lung disease amongst women.

The national color of the campaign is turquoise so we’re asking people to snap photos of the turquoise they see day to day, post it to Instagram and tag it with the hashtag #TurquoiseSeattle. It’s that easy!

Ten photographs will be selected and winners will receive $100. In addition, their photograph will be displayed at the South Lake Union Discovery Center.

Start posting and tagging! Contest ends on April 20!

West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day was created by an organization called Megawatt 11 years ago, in the vein of Greenwood Garage Sale Day, which was at the time the biggest such day in the region. WSCGSD was an immediate success but they decided to call it quits after a few years and asked if anyone wanted to take it on. We did. We cut the fees they had charged and made some other changes such as adding an online, clickable, etc. map to the printable one and maintaining a website. We also promote it around the region with as many paid and unpaid ways we can find. We have not raised the fees since setting them at lower rates in 2008, even as it’s grown. (And the basic $12 fee is less than the $15/$20 basic Greenwood fee.)

Anyway, yes, the fees cover the costs of coordination, map creation, promotion (including the time we spend on it on our site). The map is available to, and promoted to, people from far beyond West Seattle as we have adjusted the deadline over the years so that it will be done one week in advance (more typical for community garage sale days is for it to be ready a day or two ahead). People have told us they’ve had shoppers from as far away as Wenatchee.

Anything left over from costs supports continued WSB operations in covering and publishing community news 24/7/365, as well as our efforts to support the community via paid sponsorships of multiple events each year.

But if you don’t want to support WSCGSD, no law says you have to pay to have a garage sale on May 9th. While we’re driving around on WSCGSD with “as-it-happens coverage” every year, we notice some here and there that we know weren’t on the list/map. We don’t stop and wag a finger. Maybe they didn’t know.

P.S. We also offer free garage-sale listings (and job listings) here in the forum year-round, and have for years.

    Thanks for asking – TR

i looked for outcome measures on Tim Eyman initiatives and found this..

it’s only the record of the success or failure of his initiatives but it would indicate that when it comes to Eyman, Washington voters have learned to beware..

and this one is even more brutal

    http://www.wikiwand.com/en/Tim_Eyman

    and then there’s this

Have any of you went to some of your old essays and read them? I read a few from my University days. It is quite interesting to see how I wrote about items back then compared to how I would write them today.

Guns are dangerous. No doubt about it. In the hands of some people they are a menace. Too bad all citizens are not required to take a gun safety class. Gun owners need to have their guns locked up or in a secure place that children or people with mental health issues cannot get to.

This is my favorite video regarding the 2nd Amendment. The amendment was shown to a linguist. Yes of course this is from a Right Wing video but it will show you, if you want to believe it, how smart the founders were in the formative days of our country and how the language of the Constitution is very clear.

I don’t disagree with all of this, but I question some of the statistics quoted.

“…in 2005 60% of gun owners in the US illegally sell their guns to other citizens that most likely don’t have gun licenses (National Gun Victims, 2010).”

I cannot find this cite online. I think it may be misquoted from this source:

    https://gunvictimsaction.org/fact-sheet/fact-sheet-illegal-gun-trafficking-arms-criminals-and-youth/

…which says “Nearly 60% of the guns used in crime are traced back to a small number—just 1.2%—of crooked gun dealers.”

That’s quite a different statement, and of course it makes more sense. Would you really believe that over half of the people who own guns have sold them illegally?

Also, this: “One reason we need stricssster [sic] gun laws in the usa is because there have been more murders.”

In fact, crime rates, including homicides by firearm, are going down:

    http://www.cnn.com/2013/05/08/us/study-gun-homicide/

    http://www.pewsocialtrends.org/2013/05/07/gun-homicide-rate-down-49-since-1993-peak-public-unaware/

Again, not that I disagree with strict gun control laws; they are important, and guns should be kept locked up and away from kids. But I also believe that I should have the right to own a firearm for personal protection. And in fact I do. As a single woman living alone in south West Seattle, I feel it’s a sadly necessary thing to keep on hand. I’m well-acquainted with its use, I’m not planning to sell it to anyone illegally (or otherwise) and I hope to continue to have this right for as long as I wish.

Incidentally, this post reads like a school essay. If it is, I’d make a few important grammar and spelling corrections before handing it in. :)

Here’s a suggestion from my friend, and WSB’er The Velvet Bulldog:

Dress for Success is a great program run by the YWCA–they take business-type clothes to enable women to go to jobs and job interviews. They’re located at the YW’s 5th and Seneca building downtown.

phoenix, Kudos to you and your boys for your concern of this woman. I’m especially impressed with how one (or both?) of them have taken some initiative in showing concern for, and wanting to help her.

I think and offer of food or, even though McDonalds may not be the best choice for food, a gift card from there, are great ideas.

If you are uncomfortable offering her cash directly, maybe slip some into a simple, attractive card that expresses simple, good wishes, either already printed on the card, and/or hand written by you and/or your boys, or maybe in a nice, hand written note.

One of the simplest, and kindest things anyone can do is “Just Say Hello“.

Here is the website, and Facebook Page of a great guy that has been helping Homeless folks for several years now. You and your boys might like to peruse some of the stories of the Homeless that have benefitted from Rex’s kindness:

    Hello!

My name is Lia Freeman and I am a student at Ballard High School. I am in the Biotechnology Academy here and we are working on a year long science project to enter in a contest called Imagine Tomorrow. My group is conducting a behavioral study on people and solar panels in Seattle. We are trying to collect data on why or why people don’t invest in solar panels in Seattle. We have two surveys right now that we are trying to get the word out about, one for people with solar panels and one for people without. They are super quick 7-10 questions surveys.

We want to collect as much data as possible to have a more accurate view of Seattle’s look on solar panels. We’ll be using our data on a website we’re creating as a resource for those interested in solar panels in Seattle. Our goal is simply to inform people and get them excited about the opportunities solar panels offer and a broader survey would help us out so much.

    Links to the surveys:

    Non-Solar Owners

    Solar Owners

    https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/8C9MBW5

We are mainly directing these surveys to homeowners.

Thanks so much for your time!

    smitty..

you are right, sabatoging negotiations for personal political gain isn’t unprecedented. It’s highly likely that two of our Presidents have pulled that stunt to win elections…

There’s Richard Nixon who scuttled the peace talks with North Vietnam.. promising them a better deal if elected.

    http://freepress.org/article/george-will-confirms-nixons-vietnam-treason

it’s ok.. he didn’t keep his word to them either ;-) that war claimed another 20,000+ American lives before the war was ended.

And it’s highly likely that the tactic worked so well for Richard Nixon that Reagan and Bush pulled it a second time to put Bush Sr in the White House

    Reagan-Bush Ties to Iran-Hostage Crisis

    Conspiracy theories? sadly, probably not.

That this sort of thing has happened before is not anything new.. but what is new is that it was done publicly…

these guys didn’t think they needed to hide what they were doing.

is this the new normal? Open sabotage of American negotiations with foreign powers by any politician who thinks he sees a presidential gleam when he looks in his own mirror?

it’s not a future i am willing to endorse no matter which political party produces the candidate.
