Here’s a little rant … Please share the sidewalk. Do not walk two or three or four abreast, especially when you see another person or persons walking toward you. Or, if you hear people coming up behind you.

Goodness gracious folks – didn’t your parents ever teach you anything about good manners and being considerate of others?

Please make room. That means walking single file until after you pass the other person. Really, its quite easy to do – it won’t take a lot of effort on your part.

It is the little considerate things we do that make neighborhoods so much more pleasant for everyone.

First of all, my post is not about being anti-driver…

Just a thought: what if all those drivers did not know that the hand signals (used by this bicyclist) have actual meaning?

From what I understand (being a non-driver), Washington state does not require drivers to take the written driver’s test upon renewal of his/her license. Which makes me wonder if this is a huge part of why some drivers seem so oblivious or unaware of the rules of the road… Perhaps the last time they actually thoroughly read the Washington Driver Guide was when he/she got his/her license (that could be 5, 10, 15, 20++ years ago).

I also wonder: Since WA state does require drivers to take the written test every time someone re-news their license… is this directly related to so many more “bad” drivers on the road? “Bad” drivers, for example: not signaling nor looking (for oncoming traffic, pedestrians, bicycles), when making turns or lane changes; the proper use of hazard lights; speeding in school zones; driving over the posted speed limit; running yellow/red lights; parking violations; etc.

CMP you are correct. The center lane can be used to give the vehicle (cyclist) in this case safe passing clearance. And most drivers are quite good about doing this. However it’s that one driver who is so impatient and unaware that could kill/maim/injure someone that is the problem.

Todd if this were a case in which I was in a bike lane or riding in the adjacent traffic lane, yes, I would have to yield to traffic before making a leftwards movement. However, this is a sharrowed lane, meaning it’s a lane shared by both cyclists and motorists.

And if the motorist is overtaking a cyclist (or other slow moving vehicle) the passing motorist must exercise due care in passing slower vehicle on the left per SMC 11.53.200. In addition SMC 11.53.210 places limitations of passing on left; one cannot legally pass another vehicle on the left unless the pass can be made without interfering with the operation of any traffic approaching from the opposite direction or any traffic overtaken. In this case, I was the traffic that was overtaken, with my “turn signal (i.e. arm out signalling a left move)” on. Passing motorists were indeed interfering with my ability to operate my vehicle (a bicycle) in the lane. Would you pass a car on the left if the left turn signal was on and the vehicle was slowing down in front of you?

Alki Cafe was my first stop in Seattle after driving out from Chicago 15 years ago. In those early years we stopped in often for breakfast, particularly for the incredible salmon corn cakes that were on the menu at the time. For some reason the salmon corn cakes dropped off the menu some years ago. It would be awesome if you could resurrect this sublime breakfast treat.

Yes, yes, yes to Super Fun Happy Dog! Our dog Miss Daisy Cakes goes there once a week for daycare and only boards there. Kimerley’s Shankly is her boy toy LOL.

Yes, you have to go out there for an evaluation but Robert and Tiffany are amazing. Completely worth it. I really couldn’t imagine trusting anyone else with her.

Oh and Kimberley, Daisy just looked at me on her bed when I tried to get her up after coming home Wednesday. Her and Shankly had a romping good time. Completely tuckered out! :)

My son played the position of catcher for many years. As I recall, even a rudimentary catcher position wasn’t used until coach pitch (around age 7) and even then it was mainly to retrieve balls. Full-contact, protecting the plate moves have no place on the field until the kids have learned to safely slide into home plate (not at 5 or 6!). Even then, the catcher should aim for the players CHEST not the face. I seem to remember my son’s first “out at home” was when he was about 9 years old, and this was still a rare “less than a dozen times a season league-wide” thing. This incident, as explained above, is wrong on SO many levels. It is sad to hear.

Dear Sir, I was riding my bicycle down Fauntleroy southbound this afternoon. As you may know, there are no bicycle lanes this side of the street, only “Sharrows.” I was happily riding about 20 mph, to the right, so traffic could pass me, but this put me perilously close to the “door zone” even if I wasn’t right in it. Just beyond Brandon, I saw a woman leaning into her car with her car door wide open, blocking part of my path. I put out my arm to signal a leftwards movement (my left arm parallel to the roadway) well before I needed to move.

Several cars pass without any notice of me at all. By this time I’m slowing down and gesturing to my left wildly. I hear you slow down behind me yet as I pass the OPEN DOOR what do you do but not move over to give me more room but stare at me with a WTF? look on your face, shrug at me like, “What?!” As I’m yelling at you “OPEN DOOR!” I ask you to pull over if you’d like an explanation of why I SIGNALED in plenty of time for ANY vehicle to see what was happening.

Unfortunately you didn’t even seem to see the woman, the door, or my gesticulating left arm or understand what it means. You may have just thought a cyclist was doing something “weird.” Pay attention next time – maybe you’ll find out what was actually happening.

During a recent trip to Portland, I learned about ‘maneuvering zones’… because I got a ticket for being in one. In parallel parking areas, there is a two or three foot gap between every two spaces marked with yellow striping and your vehicle cannot extend into that area. This way, no matter where you park you will have a reasonable amount of room either in front of you or behind you to get in or out. I don’t think the city paints the residential areas, but they definitely stripe the downtown curbs.

After the initial frustration over the ticket, I thought it was brilliant.

I am interested in removing our existing concrete patio/walkway that runs the length of the side of our yard and extending the grass all the way to the fence. I know we can rent a jack hammer from Home Depot to break it all up, but anyone know how to dispose of all that concrete afterward? Bonus if there’s any sort of eco-friendly option!

Carson – I most certainly did not sign a waiver and I would love for you to ask them to produce any such waiver when you go in the next time! As a matter of fact they didn’t verbally warn me that the process could damage the coat either and I even inquired as to the process they use since it was very specific on the care tag. To the contrary, Lizzy informed me that they use the label to decide the process to use and it was perfectly safe. I understand them defending their position of not giving a refund but lying about it is suspect and unforgivable! My jacket was actually in great shape, with the exception of a tear in the mesh lining on the inside left (you know, above where it snaps inside to keep snow out) and the Velcro closures had come loose on the outside. I have gone from mad to infuriated knowing that they would blatantly lie, but sadly I am not surprised.

Dyn99 – I did dispute the charge and have just received a refund through MasterCard. At least now I won’t have to pay someone to damage my property.

I am saddened by the whole experience and I agree with JoB, I too am sick of being blamed for being provided an inferior service or product.

It doesn’t matter whether there’s parking only on one side of the street, or how wide the street is, or whether you think it’s safe. It’s still illegal to park facing the opposite of traffic. However, it is understandable that many people don’t know this, considering how little the law is enforced in Seattle.

Hi Alki: Like I noted earlier, I think there are situations in which parking the “wrong” direction is safer than otherwise, or, at least equally safe. However, as noted by other comments here, those are somewhat rare situations. Hopefully, and, as far as I can tell from this last experience and other sitings of parking enforcement in our neighborhood is that they are loathe to ticket “wrong” way parked cars. They could have ticketed several cars for that in our neighborhood and have chosen NOT to. In this instance, they really wanted to ticket the driver who parked into my front bumper, but couldn’t for anything but parking the wrong way.

Would I have called in the car for parking the wrong way? No, no one does that in our neighborhood, even though we get tons of that going on here since we live right at Lowman Beach Park. However, locking you in, and essentially kidnapping your car is another issue entirely. Making you late to work is another thing. Screwing up important appointments is another thing.

On the issue of ticketing such in your face parking carelessness, in this day and age of video surveillance, we now often have the evidence of who parked when and how. In fact, there are now video cameras that are so small and mountable on your dashboard that you can pretty much record most of the day as you drive along, park, etc. In fact, I don’t know if it is standard equipment on any cars yet, but I bet continuous video recording will be an option you can get on a car pretty soon, if not already available.

In this particular case, as noted above, I had the video that showed the exact time, the exact parking style, etc. Slam dunk ticket or tow as far as I am concerned.

People who are so careless won’t likely learn from a minor parking ticket that that kind of parking can really screw things up for someone unless the get towed, car impounded, or a large fine.

In fact, this person was so oblivious, they got back in their car later, with a ticket on the driver’s side windshield, under the wiper, and drove off not even noticing it. Ummm… not sure what they are smoking or drinking, but it must be powerful stuff…

OK. Here’s exactly what happened! It happened to our 5 year old daughter.

No one on our WSLL team is elitist, or racist because we are in the WSLL. We have all genders and races on OUR TEAM.

The SWLL team we were playing was being extremely aggressive towards our players. Blocking the base paths as our kids were attempting to go by. The SWLL team also fielded a catcher in FULL GEAR. WSLL teams do not field catchers for Tball games. There was a coach instructing the catcher on how to be a “big league” catcher. Standing behind home plate “teaching him”. As our players reached home base, the catcher would block home plate and apply a hard tag. A number of times the tag was in our player’s face. Their coach encouraged this as the proper way to play catcher. Our parents were dismayed as the players were getting hit in the face!

One of our parents approached the coach and said things were getting out of hand, and suggested that it wasn’t very good sportsmanship. This coach came over to the backstop and said “Hey, you want to fight Mother F-er?” Unbelievable behavior in front of kids. Another one of their coaches yelled at our parents saying we were a bunch of whiners and told us to “shut up”.

The final straw was when our daughter was coming to home plate. The catcher who was much bigger than our 5 year old, blocked the plate and slammed her to the ground onto her back. The coach behind the plate jumped up over our daughter who was on the ground and yelled “YOU’RE OUT!”… Then congratulated the catcher on a great play as our daughter lay shaken on the ground. They never even attempted to help her up or see if she was OK. The game was halted after this… She was shocked and scared for quite some time with lots of tears. She cried pretty much uncontrollably the entire drive home.

I can’t believe this has happened at a Tball game. It is unbelievable to me. FOR THE SAFETY OF OUR KIDS, our team isn’t playing against any SWLL team again, and my understanding in talking to other WSLL Tball team parents is this specific SWLL team has been fully removed from playing any WSLL teams. However, the other SWLL games are still scheduled. I feel real bad for the SWLL kids, especially this team. It’s not the kids’ fault their coaches reacted in this manner, and it’s too bad they are being punished.

Clark5080: Hard drive standard op temp is pretty high. Max temp will boil water pretty quick. Most of the time heat damages the CPU. Next most likely is ram, GPU/videocard and power supply. Some mainboards will survive the overheating of the cpu but not a power supply failure.

If the magic smoke got out then the board, chip and often ram, are toast.

@dhg/duckitude – what about when only one side of the street has parking, and there’s barely more than one lane of traffic in the “street”. In that case, is there really a “correct” side of the street to park on? It would mean going all the way to the end of the street and then pulling into someone’s driveway to turn around in order to park on the ‘right’ side of the street in such cases. And since there’s essentially one lane of traffic, then pulling out either way poses the same danger (traffic can be coming from in front or behind you no matter which way your car is parked).

@duckitude – the issue I can foresee with ticketing that type of parking would be situations like…you park 20 inches from the car in front of you, that car leaves and another car parks and reverses to only 6 inches from the front of your car…who would the parking officer ticket? Your front is only 6 inches from the back of the car in front of you. Do you get the ticket, or the car in front of you? Parking enforcement would have to witness the parking job to know who to ticket.

Hi: I don’t personally see a big problem with parking on your own strip, no matter whether it is paved or not… other people’s strips, yes, yours, no. I suppose that wouldn’t be a good idea of there are water meters or other city or state equipment located there, so that should be taken into consideration…

Some strips aren’t big enough and sidewalks should not be blocked for anyone, even if you are parking in your own driveway but parking across the sidewalk part of your driveway, because it makes for safety hazards for walkers, kids, wheelchairs, scooters for the disabled, etc.

But, then, I missed some really good points about parking the wrong way earlier, so I may not have much credibility here…
