Our West Seattle neighborhood has a very dangerous unmarked intersection: where 49th Avenue SW crosses SW Graham Street. Accidents or near-misses occur there routinely.

My son and I were involved in a rollover accident in 2015. Another serious accident occurred earlier this month. Fortunately, no one was serious hurt…this time.

We are asking the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) to provide either a traffic circle or stop signs at this uncontrolled intersection. Many of us in the neighborhood have watched cars drive though this intersection not realizing it is uncontrolled. We feel it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or worse.

Unfortunately, the SDOT does not have any data indicating this intersection is dangerous – with no reported collisions in the last three years. If you have experience or observations with this intersection being unsafe, please add your comment below.

Background: Driving East/West along Graham SW, every 4-way intersection between 50th Ave SW and 35th Ave SW (for 15 blocks) is controlled by stop signs, stop lights or traffic circles. Except 49th Ave SW /SW Graham. Driving East/West, along 49th Ave SW (for 11 blocks), every 4-way intersection from SW Morgan to SW Oregon is controlled. Except 49th Ave SW /SW Graham.

Consequently, drivers travel on 49th Ave. SW and Graham SW with a false sense of confidence they will not encounter any cross traffic. Too many times they have been proven wrong with unfortunate consequences.

We had never heard about the incident either. I checked the archives, I checked the police log and the fire log for that date. There was a medical call to the neighborhood, but it was nothing that surfaced to us at the time or any time afterward. After hearing about the ST story, I looked for the case and downloaded the documents. It was filed last November, about four months before the story. I didn’t see any obvious reason it came to their attention unless they were contacted by the family. Like all lawsuits, it makes accusations, and the subjects of the lawsuits file documents denying them – lawsuits are a little dicier to report on than criminal charges, because anyone can sue you for anything, whether or not there’s evidence. The Times reporter attempted to relate the case in the context of societal attitudes rather than just telling the story, but nonetheless it was clearly a ton of work over the course of weeks or maybe even months, including public-disclosure requests to get police reports (which generally take months). Best I can do is watch the case and cover the trial if it’s not settled first; I’ll be checking the file periodically. – TR

A man being killed by residents in much the same way as George Floyd died in the winter after the protests seems newsworthy to me, but I can’t find any other coverage besides the ST article. Seems like it would be as much of a topic as the latest gunfire, car accident, package theft etc.

We’ve been seeing a gradual increase in the number of families stopping by and are currently averaging about 20 families/day! Since we want to make sure we have enough offerings to meet the needs of all our clients, please consider donating now! In particular, we are in desperate need of Men’s clothing, especially shirts (all types…dress, polo, tee), pants/shorts, sweatshirts/hoodies/sweaters, and shoes/sneakers. Living close to West Seattle High School isn’t unpleasant. There’s traffic in the morning and release time. The students can go off campus for lunch. During that time the local stores and eateries are busy. Same is true after school. There’s no obnoxious noise outside of the usual traffic. All in all, I’d say they’re good neighbors.

Parking around churches will be tough on Sunday’s or when there’s an event there. Majority of people going will drive. Schools will have employees coming and parking early and-especially if it’s raining a LOT of parents driving their kids to school or driving to come pick them up. One funny school story is from the Seattle Times. Many years ago due to parents and neighbors’ complaints about speeders around schools SPD did emphasis patrols for a week around schools. Final tally: 75% of the speeding tickets were to parents dropping off or coming to pick up their kids. Noise: unless you live right next door shouldn’t be any noise around churches. If you live by Genesee’s playfield or Hiawatha there’ll be noise when the kids are out playing otherwise shouldn’t be much more than normal noise.

We are searching for an after school nanny to take care of 3 boys (ages 4, 5 & 6) Monday-Thursday from 2:30-5:30pm at our home in the High Point neighborhood of West Seattle. Looking for someone with a flexible schedule that can easily roll with the punches if we need to switch days of week or potentially cancel with advance notice. (Any fluctuation in schedule would be based on school-year schedule ie spring break, and extracurricular activities like tee ball and swim lessons and would be agreed upon in advance). Role mainly includes supervision and keeping them fed, taking them to parks in the neighborhood, doing art with them, playing with them…really just keeping them entertained and not fighting with each other (haha!).
