DBP, your posts are gems – with or without accompanying photos. How can anyone not be cynical about politicians? In essence, these guys have tenure – and, indeed, being invited to a gay wedding – or a hetero wedding, for that matter -is a nice perk.

I remember being quite impressed with Dow C. when I met him about six years ago. I was at a fundraiser, and Dow was the only pol who talked with me without looking over my shoulder to see if someone more influential than mere me was within greeting distance. Not enough to make me a lifelong fan, but little things do make a difference. Maybe, if I don’t hear from Joe McD within a week, I’ll cc Dow, too.

P.S. I wonder if the Pope gets a retirement party, complete with humorous roasts and a gold watch. And does he get to keep his cool Pope outfits? Will he cash out his 401k? Will he putter around the Vatican, driving the other clergy crazy? Will he take up a new hobby?

i don’t want your dogs peeing in my parking strip. one does it, the rest have to add theres to the doggy bulletin board.

it reaks! especially when its not raining, but even when it is, it still kills the grass!

plus i walk through it, into my car, into my house….

if you have a heart, train your dog to pee in your own yard!

even at parks, i sit in the grass sometimes, then that unmistakable smell comes wafting into my pleasant afternoon…

Seems ridiculous that anyone would not allow this as every country in the rest of the world does this. It saves energy and is all natural. It’s kinda like saying that no matter where you go, you must drive and not walk….

2 Much: Actually, there has been a lot of griping, in the form of litigation, about manned helicopters and airplanes being used to conduct warrantless surveillance of individual activities. It just doesn’t get a whole lot of press. Little by little, mostly in the 1980s and early 1990s, the U.S. Supreme Court stripped away whatever constitutional protection had previously been recognized (whether implicitly or explicitly) as prohibiting the government from conducting warrantless surveillance by flying over property, including private property.

These days, with some exceptions, courts generally find that even if a person has taken steps to protect his or her privacy, warrantless surveillance by helicopter or airplane is not unconstitutional if the pilot abides by FAA altitude and minimum-distance requirements. One of the seminal cases, Florida v. Riley, involved a marijuana grow in a greenhouse on a five-acre piece of property surrounded by a fence with “no trespassing” signs. The police could not see anything from ground level that would suggest criminal activity going on within. When they flew over at 400′, however, they could look down through two broken windows on the roof of the greenhouse to see marijuana plants growing inside. The Supreme Court upheld the search.

Those of use who are not comfortable with drones being operated by domestic law enforcement agencies are concerned that, because drones may be legally operated at very low altitudes and in close spaces, spaces that many Americans currently would assume are recognized as private may lose their fourth amendment protection.

Also, there are the issues that others have already noted, among them the risk of abuse and the potential for mission creep. Domestic law enforcement agencies say that they plan to use drones solely for surveillance and mostly for emergencies. Overseas, however, as we all know, drones are armed devices used to assassinate individuals the administration believes are threats to national security. Considering how quickly the Bush and Obama administrations adopted and deployed this technology as a weapons-delivery system, along with the administration’s assertion of sweeping executive authority to decide that certain individuals, including American citizens, can and should be assassinated without due process, it is not unreasonable to be concerned that after a period of time, drones might very well be deployed the same way here. The advantages, from the perspective of law enforcement, are precisely the same ones the administration has recognized: drones are cost-effective and using them significantly reduces the risks faced by law enforcement officers.

RedBlack, Your beloved Democrats of the past spoke with forked tongues. Except for 1946 to 1948 and 1954 to 1956 the House was ruled by Dems until 1994. Bills introduced to lower taxes, impose term limits or enact a line item veto were not brought up to votes on the house floor. Because of the Dem stronghold on what bills could be brought forth, the Dems used this as a tactic to stay off record, bring home the pork, while decrying national budget deficits.

Gingrich brought the public the Contract with America. Tom Foley was axed. Thank God. Only Democratic Governors were tossed that year too. The News media tried to spin it.

Clinton’s Triangulation Strategy brought him to middle while painting the Repubs and Dems as squabbling children.

The House passed 9 of the 10 items, and the Senate Voted on 6. They acted quickly because they knew Clinton to be a savvy adversary.

40% of the items the GOP promised to vote on became law. Term Limits and Line Item veto were struck down by the Supreme Court.

President Clinton and the economy actually thrived because of the Republicans. The Clinton economy was still riding the coat tails of the Reagan era and the New industries of High Tech were replacing the older brick and mortar industries.

And if you look on one of the links I provided above this thread you will see how the budget deficit was lowered tremendously

Spending has always increased no matter who the President is. The question is how much revenue vs spending.

Personally, I would take Bill Clinton in a NY minute over the current guy. Clinton made some mistakes but he also understood when to “work” with the opposition. This guy in office just blames everyone else for the countries woes, and takes no responsibility.

It really is pointless to argue anymore, but if you want, go ahead.

Comprehension skills are just fine, thank you. 200 yards? Doubt it. Noise? Close enough to 35th to be used to it, I’m sure. Cancer? Had it, it sucks. Energy sucking? Guarantee BOTH of those new houses use less energy in a year than your house does.

    Keep on whining…

    #784482

Hang on, let me put on my yuppie, daily jogger meets super sarcastic, but ever so slightly passive aggressive Seattle hipster pants. ….K, all set. Hey Velo, i said “structures towering”, not “towers”. Why don’t you try jogging less, and brushing up on your reading and comprehension skills? …and, oh yeah, the fine art of “shutty!” Some people “hate new”?…hmm..sure, some people also hate Cancer, or having NO say in monolithic structures built near them,..like oh, say enduring half a year of never ending noise, resultant in energy sucking, square foot monster houses with NO yards that literally block out the SUN for anyone within 200 yards of them. It’s awesome and thanks for jogging by to add your 2 cents. I feel better just knowing you personally checked on the project and jogged by to take a huge poo on an otherwise innocent question/posting.

WSB, thank you for the awesome follow up. Question answered, you rock.

I see now the OP said east end of Kenyon, apologies!

I know we live in bigger houses now. And I don’t hate modern at all. It just seems counter to the point of the GMA which is all about conservation, to be building huge energy sucking houses!

I am pretty sure they no longer charge that facilities fee. I ended up getting reimbursed for the two I got hit with last year and basically an apology note saying it was against the contract they had with my insurance to charge it. In subsequent visits I no longer had to sign the form in regards to the fee.

TSA has given up on the full-body scanners, so that’s progress.

I’m also encouraged to see that here (in Seattle) and other places, govt. officials have been backing off the police state routine a little. The decision to ground the SPD drones was refreshing. And the scrutiny the Port surveillance cameras are getting is cool, too. (Thanks, WSB!)

Mind you, I’m not opposing either drones or surveillance cameras. They have their uses. But this post-9/11 trend of citizens just rolling over for any “security measure” the govt. wanted was getting tedious. I hope that sad, stupid phase of our history is over.

    Meanwhile, technology marches on.

We would like someone to start 2/17.

If you are interested just reply to the post and I will give you my contact info.

Hey Skeeter, take it from someone who has close friends high up the food chain – 3yrs. late, billions over budget, and design/production flaws that ground your brand new fleet? Yeah, even THEY acknowledge internally that outsourcing was the root cause of all of this.

Was it a new technology? Yes. Was it bound to have some growing pains? Sure. Did they make a huge error trying to outsource the production of this? Absoloutely. And they’d tell you that if they could.

Problem is, this isn’t an isolated incident with outsourcing. It’s fairly common.

And as someone who comes across as a nationalist to at least some degree (am I wrong about that?), why don’t you get all up in Boeing’s grill about giving important, high-paying technology work to guys in Europe and Asia? Why doesn’t that get under your craw? Does the word “unions” possibly have anything to do with it?

Hi Talaki, That’s really sweet of you to donate food. I know the two women that struggle to take care of them will be happy. Let’s see. Our car is currently under the weather of the very expensive variety. So, I could go with you and help carry food but I would need a ride. I can help you with other errands or projects while you’re recovering if you need help. I’m available from 10am 2pm M-W this week then school will be out until next Tuesday so I’ll be with my little one all day. F.C.A.T. will be spearheading this project gratefully. How great it is of them, them being mostly comprised of one super woman and dedicated volunteers. I didn’t want to ask them for more help but they found me and offered straight away. Yes, I will share details of what works and what doesn’t. I got some great tips from my cragslist ad too. Apparently, cinder blocks are the best material to raise the beds/feeding stations from raccoons since they can climb like monkeys but can not jump like cats. I’ll include this in the final report. So, please contact me if you want to make a pet store run and anything else you might need. I don’t know Teri yet so feel free to contact me at makithappen@rocketmail.com

Dear Genesee, No worries. I didn’t mean to attack. Just tired of both the bird/cat debate and didn’t have the energy, still don’t, to deviate from my mission an immediate need to get these critters safe. By the way, being told that the focus of something you care about invalid is like telling a mother who needs food for her children she should have never reproduced in the first place since they are environmental hazards as are all humans. So, there was some defensiveness thrown in too. Two cats were killed in our neighborhood which included a neighbors pet and my 8mth old kitten I have been fostering and nurturing from 3weeks old from the very colony that needs help. We are just a half block from the cat colony and I know they need shelter ASAP as requested by their careproviders so that is really my only focus for the moment. No hard feelings please. Maybe I can help you build cat proof bird houses. Cheers!

Have you links to the original studies, other than the links disputing them? It is my understanding that the recent reports on songbird and small mammal fatalities were a compilation of many studies (not just one) in order to present a broader view.

Claims such as “The program protects wildlife living nearby” are flawed at best. In fact, the Cimeron project (it doesn’t appear to be an actual study)does not involve ANY bird studies or counts, therefore NO clinical evidence that this program reduces bird attrition rates.

Clearly, many birds fall prey to roaming cats in every setting, whether urban or “wildlife habitats” – including backyards. Avian nesting sites are everywhere, as are avian feeding sites. Citing a single example of success by a cat rescue group is no more acceptable as proof than a single study in the Journal of Ornithology. As someone who loves both cats AND birds, I think it’s important to look at the entire picture. I’m willing to go either way, but based on real, objective evidence. Saving feral cats is a good thing. Restrictions on roaming animals, laws to mandate neutering of all pets, and penalties for unlicensed breeding – better yet.

Yes! I think Trap-Neuter-Release + feeding stations away from bird habitat is a good compromise. According to the cimeron.com article, this strategy has reduced the cat population significantly:

Our spay/neuter efforts have successfully stabilized the population. […] Over 80 kittens and friendly adult cats have been adopted into loving homes, which combined with attrition, has reduced the population [of the studied area] by 49%.

Surely this is a better approach than killing kittehs.

And interesting read regarding the recently released bird study: http://www.alleycat.org/page.aspx?pid=945

…published in the Journal of Ornithology1, is a limited study that cannot be extrapolated to represent the complex cat-bird dynamic nationwide. Much more disturbing, however, is how this data has been manipulated to malign cats and used widely to dredge up a false and counterproductive debate.

‘It is absurd to think that a minor study conducted on a single species of bird in a small area of suburban Maryland could accurately be used to characterize the relationship between cats and birds in landscapes all over America.’

(Click on the above link to read the entire article).

EXAMPLE OF SUCCESS: Cimeron Morrissey, Project Bay Cat

Feral cat and bird lovers can find a solution by collaborating. Cimmeron’s program is setting an example around the world as an effective and compassionate way to manage homeless cats while protecting birds and the environment. The program protects wildlife living nearby. Ten wooden feeding stations were built for the cats by Homeless Cat Network and installed along the trail away from wildlife habitats. The program’s effectiveness is a result of keeping the cats well-fed and concentrated away from avian nesting sites.

You can read more about her program here: http://www.cimeron.com/page3/page3.html

Save the FERAL cats, kill a few more birds.

    Cat Predation

Americans keep an estimated 60 million cats as pets. Let’s say each cat kills only one bird a year. That would mean that cats kill over 60 million birds (minimum) each year – more wildlife than any oil spill.

Scientific studies actually show that each year, cats kill hundreds of millions of migratory songbirds. In 1990, researchers estimated that “outdoor” house cats and feral cats were responsible for killing nearly 78 million small mammals and birds annually in the United Kingdom.

University of Wisconsin ornithologist, Dr. Santley Temple estimates that 20-150 million songbirds are killed each year by rural cats in Wisconsin alone.

Feline predation is not “natural.” Cats were domesticated by the ancient Egyptians and taken throughout the world by the Romans. Cats were brought to North America in the 1800’s to control rats. The “tabby” that sits curled up on your couch is not a natural predator and has never been in the natural food chain in the Western Hemisphere.

Cats are a serious threat to fledglings, birds roosting at night and birds on a nest. Research shows that de-clawing cats and bell collars do not prevent them from killing birds and other small animals. For healthy cats and wild birds, cats should not be allowed to roam free.

Work with your local humane society, veterinarians and state wildlife agency to enact and enforce free-roaming cat regulations. For more information:

Tonight I found out that you can get cheated out of training. at the price they charge it is not good.

It seems if you are in the calendar for training, when you check in you get charged for the training. If your trainer didn’t show up (as happened to me) you still get charged for it. The desk people can’t un-do that. I am going to have to go in during the day and get a log of training, get that un-done and see how many times that has happened. My trainer sometimes didn’t show up! How many times was I charged for a no-show?

They say you get charged if you, as a member, do not give 24 hour notice. I should get FREE training if the trainer no-shows.

TIP TO KNOW WHERE YOU STAND: If you check in at the back computer, they can print you a receipt that shows your sessions available and if you are being charged that night.

GET YOUR RECORDS: I did. Guess what? I was charged for a training session on my bowling night when I do not go to the gym! Trainers can bill you without you even being there.

I liked their older system where I had to put in my PIN number to get charged for training. The way it is now, I can use up all my training and never even have a training session.

    If you have personal training,

    1. GET A COPY of your log and verify it for accuracy

    2. ALWAYS check in at the back computer and GET YOUR RECEIPT! See if you’re being charged that night or if the number of sessions left mysteriously went down when you weren’t at the gym.
