I don’t recommend buying your own modem because, whenever there is a problem with the ‘net, they will tell you that it’s your equipment. If it’s their equipment, they will fix the line. (It is not usually the box that’s the problem but, you know, if it’s yours, that is what they’ll say).
Regarding backup: You can never have too many. Consider Carbonite. $50 / yr gets your data backed up to the cloud. Should someone steal your pc, or should lightning strike, you will still be able to recover your data.
