Filmmaker Ava DuVernay explores the history of racial inequality in the United States, focusing on the fact that the nation’s prisons are disproportionately filled with African Americans. The movie is titled after the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which states that slavery and involuntary servitude are illegal “except as a punishment for crime.” With archival footage, and testimony from activists, politicians, historians, and formerly incarcerated women and men, it analyzes the U.S. prison boom and the criminalization of African Americans in the light of that clause.
