What Cain’s Jawbone Is
Cain’s Jawbone is one of the most notorious literary puzzles ever created. Written in 1934 by Edward Powys Mathers (under the pseudonym “Torquemada”), it’s not just a murder mystery — it’s a 100-page book with its pages deliberately printed out of order.
The challenge:
Put the pages back in their correct sequence.
Untangle the interwoven narratives.
Identify the six murder victims and their killers.
Sounds simple? It isn’t. With over 32 million possible page orders, it’s considered one of the hardest puzzles in literary history. In fact, only a handful of people have ever solved it correctly.
Today, Cain’s Jawbone has become a cult favorite among puzzle lovers, mystery fans, and codebreakers who want to test their logic, patience, and imagination against a nearly impossible challenge.
What The Secret: A Treasure Hunt Is
The Secret: A Treasure Hunt is a legendary real-world puzzle book created by Byron Preiss in 1982. Inside the book are 12 elaborate riddles, each pairing a poem with a fantastical painting. Together, they hide clues pointing to buried treasures — small ceramic casques — hidden in cities across North America. Each casque contains a key that can be redeemed for a precious jewel. But here’s the twist: even though thousands of treasure hunters have tried, only three of the twelve have ever been found. The rest are still out there, waiting to be unearthed more than 40 years later.
The book blends art, poetry, mythology, and geography into one of the most enduring treasure hunts in modern history, sparking a cult following of puzzle-solvers who still chase its secrets today.
