Join Northwest Science Writers Association and Folio: The Seattle Athenaeum for a celebration of Madeline Ostrander’s brand-new nonfiction book, At Home on an Unruly Planet (Holt). A series of deeply reported, vivid, and hopeful accounts of American communities confronting the climate crisis, the book asks, how do we find a sense of home and rootedness in a time of upheaval? The book, which is already garnering high praise, tackles this question with “searching intelligence and uncommon empathy,” according to Pulitzer prize-winning author Elizabeth Kolbert.

Award-winning KUOW public radio reporter John Ryan will join Madeline on stage to talk about her book, about writing and reporting the longest of long-form science stories, and about hope and solutions amid crisis. Madeline will share experiences from her reporting from remote Alaska to Florida to here in the Pacific Northwest. Then we’ll raise a glass and have time for celebrating and mingling.

This event will be held outdoors on the patio of The Collective in South Lake Union. A ticket purchase includes one beverage of your choice (alcoholic or non-alcoholic).There is a full bar and restaurant on the premises.

Other organizational supporters of this event include the Jack Straw Cultural Center, Artist Trust, Hedgebrook, YES! Magazine, and Society of Environmental Journalists.

August 5, 2022, 6:30 pm-9:00 pm. (Doors at 6:30, talk at 7:00, book signing and mingling until 9:00 pm), ticket price $5–$20 (register here)
