Breathe Deep Seattle is a 5K timed run, fun run, and walk in Lincoln Park to raise money for the LUNGevity Foundation, lung cancer research and support on August 10th. The route will go through the forest and along the beach of Lincoln Park. Leashed pets and rugged strollers are welcome. Check in/registration starts at 8:30 am, with the program starting at 9 am, and the race at 9:30 am.

On Saturday August 10, 2013, the 5K race and walk will take place in Seattle’s Lincoln Park. The event welcomes runners and walkers, and registration fees for the event range from $10 to $40. Runners will be timed. Event participants will receive a free t-shirt and be treated to refreshments and a DJ after the event. Event participants will also receive their own web page to raise funds toward lung cancer research and track their individual or team goal.

The Breathe Deep Seattle 5K race and walk is a wonderful way for participants to spend a summer morning. Participants will enjoy a beautiful one-mile trail run through evergreen forest, with views from a bluff to the Puget Sound below. Then they will wind their way down to the beach and run for 2 miles along the water on paved and hard-packed gravel travel. Wildlife, waves, and mountain and sound views will inspire!

More from the event’s news release:

Breathe Deep Seattle was started to honor Sara Ratzenberger and others whose lives have been affected by lung
cancer. At age 31, Sara was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. With a history of a healthy and active lifestyle, even Sara’s medical team did not consider lung cancer a possibility. Only after intensive lung surgery was her cancer finally discovered. Sadly, Sara passed away two and a half years later.

We want others to know that lung cancer has no boundaries, but there is hope! In just its first 2 years, Breathe Deep Seattle has raised over $110,000 for LUNGevity Foundation, the largest private funder of lung cancer research. Through events like Breathe Deep Seattle, LUNGevity is able to provide a community of hope for those affected by this disease.

Like Seattle resident Eva Borsi, an avid bike rider and mother of 3, who was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer at the age of 46. As a result of targeted therapeutic treatments, Eva is now a passionate lung cancer advocate and ran the entire Breathe Deep Seattle course! Please join us on Saturday, August 10, 2013, to raise awareness for the number one cancer killer and to raise money for lung cancer research. With your help, there is hope!

Although smoking is a major cause of this disease, about 55% of all new lung cancer diagnoses are among people who have never smoked or are former smokers. Sara and Eva’s families are committed to educating the community about this and other misconceptions surrounding lung cancer. The 3rd annual /Breathe Deep Seattle/, Washington’s 5K event to benefit LUNGevity Foundation and the organization’s mission to fund lung cancer research will take place on August 10. Last year’s event attracted nearly 600 supporters, including participants, survivors, volunteers, and media coverage.

“The key is to raise money for research,” states Amy May, Volunteer Event Coordinator for /Breathe Deep Seattle/. “Both Sara and Eva’s cancers were found in stage four, which is not uncommon. But that needs to change because only 15% of lung cancer diagnoses happen during the earliest and most curable stage of the disease, making lung cancer the most deadly cancer in America. The 5-year survival rate for lung cancer is only 16%, and that is unacceptable.”

“1 in 14 Americans is impacted by lung cancer, so you have likely been touched by the disease, whether your realize it or not. It’s time to care about lung cancer and those it touches. We hope the community will support this critical cause by helping us to meet our $70,000 fundraising goal,” shares May.
