Thanks again to Jim Hardy from West Seattle HS volleyball for score reports – the team won again yesterday, 3-2 over Rainier Beach (25-21, 20-25, 25-20, 13-25,16-14), and JV also won over RB, 3-0. (All sports are welcome to report results! E-mail, FB, text, whatever works.) Meantime, here’s what’s ahead in HS football, with all three West Seattle schools’ teams coming off wins last week: Chief Sealth HS plays Nathan Hale at the Northeast Complex (map) 7 pm tomorrow; West Seattle HS faces Ingraham at Southwest Complex (map), also 7 pm tomorrow; and Saturday’s the Seattle Lutheran HS Homecoming game, 1:30 pm vs. Friday Harbor at West Seattle Stadium (map).

The September 27th Centennial Celebration at Tibbetts United Methodist Church began with an 8:30am coffee hour during which members old and new gathered to greet one another and watch video footage taken 50 years ago during the construction of the Sanctuary that stands today. The Worship Service included music by a large Centennial Choir and the Tibbetts Handbell Choir. United Methodist Bishop Grant Hagiya gave the sermon and Pastor Joanne Carlson Brown greeted former pastors and friends of Tibbetts who had come back for the celebration events.
A big THANK YOU to the West Seattle Community for your support of Tibbetts United Methodist Church, over the last 99 years, during this special Centennial year, and for all the years to come. We’re 100!
Also from Sunday – we got a couple of notes about two big Navy cargo ships seen off West Seattle shores for a while today. JayDee got a photo, too.
After exhaustive online research, absent the ability to get direct info from the U.S. Navy on a Sunday night, we still couldn’t nail down exactly which ships they were; we thought this Snohomish County article about three ships visiting Everett might be a clue, but the photos of those ships don’t resemble this one. We’ll check with the Navy later today. (9:45 AM UPDATE: Thanks to Mark for the answer! He tracks ship traffic with this site, and says they were the Cape Island and Cape Intrepid, both indeed with the Military Sealift Command.)

After scoring its first win in two years last week, Chief Sealth High School (2-2) has now won two games in a row, winning at Ingraham tonight, 21-14. West Seattle High School (3-1) won big over Nathan Hale at Southwest Athletic Complex, 40-7, and Seattle Lutheran (2-2) beat Concrete on the road, 25-12. We’ll add details, and video from the in-town games, shortly.
ADDED 11:35 PM: First, the Wildcats (covered by Patrick): West Seattle shook off last week’s loss to O’Dea and defeated Nathan Hale 40-7 on a night that saw lots of big plays. The Wildcats had an explosive second quarter, running up 28 points before the half. In that quarter, running back Nikko Emm had 78 of the 97 yards he’d finish the night with. Hale’s only drive before halftime was disrupted by Markeem Adams, who came up out of his defensive back position to intercept Hale quarterback Travis Wilson and take it down to the 12-yard line, which led to Danny Phan scoring on the next play. It was not Adams’ only big play of the night — here, just after the start of the third quarter, he scores on a 52 yard pass play.
After the game, West Seattle coach Davis Lura talked about how his team came together tonight.
On the night, WSHS had 178 yards rushing on 20 carries, with 221 yards passing. Markeem Adams finished the night with 122 yards and two touchdowns, while Nikko Emm had nine carried for 97 yards and one touchdown.
From the Sealth game (covered in part by Tracy): We hadn’t originally planned to go up to Ingraham but changed our mind and headed north to see how the Seahawks were doing in the followup to last week’s win over Cleveland. When we arrived in the second quarter, the score was 14-13 Ingraham, but it wasn’t long before Sealth took the lead with a touchdown followed by a 2-point conversion – we caught the TD on Flip video, from a distance:
With that, the score was 21-14 Sealth, and that’s how it remained for the duration of the game. Stat highlight: Senior quarterback Daniel Davis had 1 TD passing, 1 TD rushing. As for the SLHS game – here are some game stats from our partners at the Seattle Times.
All three of West Seattle’s high schools play football tonight, and all three games are at 7 pm: Seattle Lutheran (1-2) is at Concrete (2-1); West Seattle High School (2-1) is at Southwest Athletic Complex (2801 SW Thistle) against Nathan Hale (1-2); Chief Sealth (1-2) is playing Ingraham (1-1) at the Northwest Athletic Complex (map). Sealth is coming off its win against Cleveland last week; we went to the school this morning to talk with defensive coordinator Ernest Policarpio about tonight’s game:

HIGHLAND PARK ELEMENTARY HOLIDAY BAZAAR: HP Elementary’s PTSA has announced its holiday bazaar (first one we’ve gotten official notice of!) and is looking for vendors:
Highland Park Elementary school is having a Holiday Bazaar on December 5th from 10 am to 3 pm. We will have lots of vendors selling home made items as well as a few commercial vendors, bake sale items, lunch will be for sale and an awesome Raffle!! We are also collecting food for the local food banks – bring in one non-perishable food item in exchange you will get one free raffle ticket – one free ticket per person. Before tonight’s Seattle Lutheran High School–Northwest Christian game at West Seattle Stadium, Saints fans tailgated in the parking lot. An action-packed game followed: Despite losing starting quarterback Gabe Wadsworth to an injury in the first quarter, NW Christian managed to put together a ground game that beat Seattle Lutheran 28-22. Filling in for Wadsworth was wide receiver Zach Thomas, who managed to split the running game between the other backup quarterback, Ben Conner, and fullback Steven Dunn for a total of 399 yards. But SLHS scored the first touchdown of the game, on a Jake Lovely run:
Seattle Lutheran also made a strong comeback in the fourth quarter and scored to bring the game close. The drive was highlighted by Conner Mullen, who made a single catch for 37 yards. On the night. Lutheran managed 170 total yards of offense — 49 came from Mullen, along with 44 from Jake Lovely. Lutheran’s standout for the night was running back Fred Lisko who had 58 yards rushing, 12 yards passing, and two touchdowns.
More details to come, but first the scores, since both games are now over: 
Chief Sealth High School (1-2) blanked Cleveland for its first win, Sealth 30-Cleveland 0 at Southwest Athletic Complex … O’Dea beat West Seattle High School (2-1) 39-7 at West Seattle Stadium.
10:51 PM: Tonight’s win was actually Chief Sealth’s first since October 2007 – which was also against Cleveland. We’ve added a photo of tonight’s scoreboard at left. Sealth’s next two games are on the road (here’s the season schedule) – they’ll be at Ingraham at 7 pm next Friday.
ADDED 11:27 PM: More now from the WSHS game: West Seattle’s only touchdown came when quarterback Ellison Tran ran the ball in on the keep just a few minutes into the first quarter. The score came on West Seattle’s first possession of the game. The Wildcats moved the ball 75 yards on 11 plays.

Even though registration ended a while ago, we are still looking for a few players in selected age groups to fill out some teams in those divisions. We had a few games this past weekend, but the season starts in earnest this coming Saturday and Sunday.
We are looking for players in the following age groups:
* Boys U8 – 1-2 players
* Boys U9 – 1-2 players
* Girls U11 – 2-3 players
* Girls U15 – 3-4 players (desperate need)
* Girls U16 – 1-2 players
* Girls U17 – 1-2 playersThe players have to be under the age above by August 1 of this year (eg, U8 players need to be under 8 on August 1 [2009] to be eligible). We have a record 1425 players and over 250 coaches on 142 teams in our league this fall and are continuing to grow every season. Both of tonight’s games are over: At Memorial Stadium downtown, West Seattle High School (now 2-0) beat Franklin, 28-13; at Southwest Athletic Complex in West Seattle, Chief Sealth High School (0-2) lost to Rainier Beach, 39-0. Seattle Lutheran High School plays North Beach in Ocean Shores tomorrow afternoon. ADDED EARLY SATURDAY: A little more about the WSHS game – which started late and ran long, so our correspondent didn’t get to see much of the Sealth game (we can tell you all the scoring happened in the first half): At Memorial Stadium, Franklin and WSHS played a lackluster first half that was marred by an array of penalties. After the half, WSHS seemed to find their foot and got off to a fast start, scoring on their first series in the second half. In that series alone, sophomore Nikko Emm had two carries for 33 yards. On the night, Emm managed to gain 187 yards. After the game, Coach Davis Lura talked with us about Emm and the change in momentum in the second half:

Westside’s Volleyball team swept Cleveland HS 3-0 Wednesday night in their season opener at Cleveland.
Seniors Jess Harrison and Mariah Doll were the only returning lettermen on a young Wildcats squad that saw 7 players start in their first Varsity matches. Junior setter Taylor Magera had 23 assists in her Varsity debut, and sophomores Emmie Riley and Nicole Broten turned in solid performances in their first Varsity appearances.
Westside Coach Gail Mowrer was very pleased with her young team and relieved to come away with the win. “They are a very scrappy team that plays every ball to the whistle and always give us a lot of trouble.” Mowrer noted. “With so many young players, we felt that the keys for us would be to execute the fundamentals and try to serve and pass well.”
The Wildcats pulled away late in the first game to win 25-18. They controlled the second set, winning 25-14. In the third game, the Cats needed to come from behind to overcome a 7-point deficit midway through the set as Cleveland came out playing very well. In the preliminary match, the West Seattle Junior Varsity team won their match 3-0. The next match will be Monday night at Nathan Hale [map].

You’re a beginning runner — say, you’ve been jogging a few miles a few days a week for the past couple of months — and someone asks if you’d like to run a 27-mile marathon through Peruvian peaks to Machu Picchu (map) on one of the most challenging race trails in the world. Would you do it?
If you’re 26-year-old Maureen “Mo” Gillis, the answer is, absolutely!

All three high schools in West Seattle have now had their season-opening games – two last night (WSB coverage here) and one tonight – Seattle Lutheran High School hosted Darrington at West Seattle Stadium. Final score – Loggers 18, Saints 6. Our correspondent’s just back and we’ll add more here in a bit.
1:44 AM: Added video atop this report; meantime, more on the game, as promised: The Saints played penalty-free, but failed to overcome the Darrington running game. Darrington kept the ball on the ground for the better part of the night, controlling the clock, and the score. The Saints’ only score came on a four-play drive that saw starting quarterback Lucas Driscoll, a senior, replaced by freshman quarterback Trevor Forsell. Forsell handed off to senior Jake Lovely, who ran it 35 yards for the score. On the night, Lovely had seven carries for 62 yards and was the offensive stand out for he Saints. Next week, a road game — the Saints travel to Ocean Shores to play North Beach at 2 pm Saturday (9/12).
We’ll add a detailed report here later; first, both games are in the books: West Seattle High School over visiting Belmont (from just outside Victoria, BC) at West Seattle Stadium, 33-6 (covered live on Twitter at @wsblive, including a half-hour delay while an injured Belmont player was tended to – he went to the hospital for observation of what’s believed to be a “neck stinger“); Sammamish over visiting Chief Sealth, 27-0. Seattle Lutheran plays its first game tomorrow (Saturday), facing Darrington at WS Stadium.
ADDED 2:11 AM: From the WSHS game – first, a short video clip of the traditional postgame congratulations etc.
WSB co-publisher Patrick Sand reports Belmont presented West Seattle with small Canadian flags. As for game highlights: Running back Danny Phan had 3 touchdowns on the night. Other stars of the game were Isaiah Jenkins, with a couple of key runs in the 3rd quarter; he also intercepted a Belmont pass that ended Belmont’s best drive of the night. Belmont finally scored with less than 2 minutes to go in the game, but missed the extra point when their kicker fumbled the ball. Next week, it’s WSHS vs. Franklin, 5 pm Friday night (Sept. 11) at Memorial Stadium (Seattle Center). Now a few notes about Chief Sealth:

Next week, Sealth hosts Rainier Beach at Southwest Athletic Complex. In a discussion of tonight’s game on our Facebook page, Sealth’s new athletic director Sam Reed said, “The boys played hard, and I am proud of them. They competed with a small squad and got some new players some game experience. Looking forward to seeing them incorporate some more players over the next couple weeks.”

That’s a very quick snippet from our visit to West Seattle High School‘s varsity football practice session Wednesday afternoon at Madison Middle School (where the Wildcats are practicing until Hiawatha field renovations are done later this year; here’s another brief clip). We published their schedule here 2 weeks ago; their kickoff game is 7 pm tomorrow, West Seattle Stadium, vs. Belmont Secondary (from British Columbia). Chief Sealth High School football gets going tomorrow too, 7 pm Friday at Sammamish, and here’s their schedule; and Seattle Lutheran opens its season vs. Darrington, 7 pm Saturday at West Seattle Stadium (SLHS calendar here).
WSHS is coming off its Metro Sound Division title season, and the coaches’ poll at the Seattle Times (WSB partner) also picks them to repeat. The team’s fundraising campaign is stepping up too – you can see head coach Davis Lura‘s video message about it on this page at Fundblast.com, which also details the discounts available through the Gold Card the team is selling (which you can buy online through a link in the lower-left section of this page). South Seattle Community College (which you of course know is in West Seattle) isn’t just a place for vocational courses, 2-year degrees, other traditional community-college offerings … not only do they offer 4-year degrees too and some studies you might not expect, they also offer one-time events and continuing-ed classes, like what’s coming up next week with FSN Northwest reporter Jen Mueller – “Talk Sporty, Lite,” described by the folks at SSCC as a “happy hour” event previewing a workshop Mueller will teach in October for the “sports-challenged” who want to be able to talk sports with friends/family. On a perfect summer night in The Junction, the Ride and Glide bicycle-stunt team did head-over-wheels 360s last night at their West Seattle Christian parking-lot performance, as well as full upright turns – and more. We snapped them in mid-air; from the ground, Mike contributed video he uploaded to YouTube:

They of course spent some time urging young riders not to imitate their stunts – and to always wear helmets, among other healthy choices to be made in life. Ride and Glide is based here in the Puget Sound area; more info online at rideandglide.com.
We unintentionally skipped this in the Weekend Lineup but we just got a reminder note that it’s definitely on: The Ride and Glide “Extreme Sports Team” (featured above in a YouTube clip from last year) will be showing off BMX moves at the West Seattle Christian Preschool lot (41st/Genesee; map) tonight – free hot dogs at 5:30 pm, show at 6:30 pm. (If for some reason rain returns – not currently forecast – the show will move inside to the WSCC Activity Center, which is on 42nd just south of Genesee.)
