Bruce Butterfield of the Fauntleroy Community Association tipped us to this boat when he saw it passing southern West Seattle shores – by the time we got down to Lowman Beach for a look, it was on the beach at Williams Point (by Colman Pool) – we couldn’t take the time to walk over there right now to find out more, but caught this photo via zoom. 4:48 PM UPDATE: Looks like it’s part of Tribal Journeys – just got some photos from Alki – posting them separately. I was thinking it looked Salish…the Intertribal Canoe Journey is coming up here soon.
It’s the Canoe Journey. We’d played hooky and went to Alki and there were several canoes and their teams on the beach.
We talked to a friendly guy named Joe – he was wearing a beautiful woven cedar hat with a big feather on it – and he told us they’re headed all the way up to Canada. Their next stop for the day was Squamish, (did I spell that right?) – 30 miles up the sound.
We wish them the best of luck, tides that help them on their way, and excellent weather!
Yep – Pam is right about the Native Canoe Journey – Tribal Journeys 2008 Paddle to Cowichan. I think she meant to say the next stop for this group of canoes would be “Suquamish” Tribe which is across the water from Seattle. The spelling she used (Squamish) is a tribe in North Vancouver, B.C.. They are also involved in the Journey, but the canoes with that group are taking a different route. Thanks Pam for the good wishes for a safe Journey. Everyone is welcome to come, view, ask questions, see the canoes up close, chat and hang out. “Kids” of all ages are sure to enjoy the experience.
