Police confirm arrest in early-morning West Seattle HS burglary

Police confirm a break-in early this morning at West Seattle High SchoolVictoria tells WSB there was quite the commotion on her section of Walnut between about 3:30 am and 5:30 am, when a car apparently related to the investigation was finally towed; Lt. Steve Paulsen at the Southwest Precinct says one “adult” was arrested and they suspect “some seniors (were) involved as well.” Thanks also to Todd for pointing out this brief online citywide-media report, which suggests the burglars had targeted computer equipment.

They arrested the kid on the parking strip directly across the street from me. My wife and I woke up after hearing the police yell “get down on the ground before you get shot in the back!” There were at least 5 cruisers involved and they had the K-9 unit out and looking for the other suspect.

I would like to comment as a school employee who works in the classroom next door to the break-in. The burglars stole items from our special education students. These students are autistic, have developmental delays, cerebral palsy, and for the most part are non-verbal. We lost a boom-box, a Nintendo game machine and all the games, numerous other software games and movies, and especially an adaptive technology touch screen computer used by our severely disabled students. These items may sound simple to the general public, but to our students they were forms of commuication, physical therapy for hand movements, and aided us in teaching social skills to our students. We can only hope that the young person caught in the act will find it in their heart to convince the accomplices to return what was taken. There is no way this equipment will ever be replaced any other way – the cost is too great for the school district. Most of these items were paid for out of pocket by the classroom teacher, and school district insurance does not cover those losses.

A huge thank you to the Seattle School security officers and Seattle police officers who responded as quickly as they did to avoid further loss to the three other class rooms directly connected (without doors) to the one broken in to.

We understand that one suspect was apprended, and three more are being sought. We also heard (but not confirmed) that the burglars were middle school students from Denny and Madison. I can only hope that it isn’t true.

Very sad to hear about the special equipment taken. PT, does insurance cover any of it?

FYI there is word of additional arrests in this. We are pursuing further details before a new report with that info but wanted to note it here for anyone catching up.

Sorry, comment time is over.
