Fauntleroy-Vashon-Southworth ferry wi-fi operational?

screengrab.jpg

Haven’t seen a formal announcement — this was the last update we had — but according to the service provider for Washington State Ferries wi-fi (screen grab above), the wi-fi system is now “operational” on the Fauntleroy-Vashon-Southworth route, which would be news. Maybe WSF has been a little too busy to trumpet it?

Is it the Fauntleroy-Vashon-Southworth ferry that’s operational or the wi-fi?

A consultant working with Parsons, the telecommunications company setting up the wi-fi system for WSF knocked on our door at Alki Point last night wanting to talk about putting an antenna on our roof top. The site has direct line view of most of the Vashon, Bremerton and Bainbridge ferry runs, at least the portions crossing the Sound. I didn’t get all the information but he was going to send me specifics as well as pictures of the equipment they would plan to install. Looks like they are still working at finding land-based sites to set up/improve Internet access for the ferries. I have very mixed (and mostly negative) feelings about having this set up on our roof…

On the subject of ferries wi-fi: A couple of weeks ago I was shooting photos for the WSB at Luna (Anchor) Park when the Bainbridge ferry passed in the distance. I checked my e-mail while I was waiting for some clouds to clear the Olympics and noticed the Washington State Ferries wi-fi appeared among the available networks on my iPhone. I was surprised to say the least as the ferry was at least a half-mile from me at that point. Granted, there was an unobstructed line of sight between the ferry and me. But man, they sure do have those wireless nodes cranked to eleven.

Terrific. You can say goodbye to your loved ones via email as the boat goes down. Glad to see WSF is taking care of us.

Sorry, comment time is over.
