West Seattle Crime Watch: Suspect arrested in Alki shooting

We have mentioned this in our running updates on the West Seattle Crime Prevention Council meeting, but wanted to post it separately as well. Lt. Steve Paulsen says a “juvenile suspect” has been arrested in connection with the May 1st Alki shooting. He’s still in the middle of general Q/A with the attendees here on a variety of issues, but we will pursue more details ASAP. 8:19 PM UPDATE: The meeting’s over and we just caught up with Lt. Paulsen. Police aren’t releasing any more details right now – the investigation continues – other than the fact the suspect is “a juvenile” with “gang affiliation.” (As previously reported, the 19-year-old shooting victim was known to police as a gang member.) We’ll check tomorrow with the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office to see if we can find out the suspect’s status – whether charges have been filed, etc.

I lived on Alki near the sand for a year. My car was stolen twice. Since I used it for my job I almost lost my job for lack of a car. And as afr as enjoying the beach-it was loud obnoxious drunks partying after dark all summer long. I couldn’t wait for my lease to expire so I could move.

You see more nice looking Asian, black, hispanic/latino … families. (We honkies have been hogging the place to ourselves all along). You also see inappropriate young people. But more and more, you see punks, groups of young people acting angry, scowling, loud, filthy mouths, aggressive, intimidating. Get lost punks and thugs and while you’re at it, wipe each other out. I’m over your sh*t and feeling any sympathy for (collective) you.

I really hope you don’t think this is new?
( I moved back to Alki shortly after WW2. )
    I’ve said in other post,
If you think kids are bad today, you should have been here in the late 50’s-late 60’s when from time to time,
the Hells Angles thought Alki would be a great place to take over.
Alki isn’t for everyone. I’ll take the good with the bad.
I’m still here. My great grandkids still go to Alki Elementary,
It’s going to take more then loud mouths and intimidating language to make me leave Alki.
I applaud the ones who know, Alki is not for them, and move away.

We need a sign underneath the Luna Park sign says: “Yo! Gang activity will NOT be tolerated. Go deal your drugs elsewhere.”

  • Islewrite May 20, 2009 (1:06 pm)

    And another sign:

    “REAL men walk chihuahuas.”

I doubt signage is the answer. As a matter of fact, it may even be the desire for irony that makes things worse. How about a toll to get on Harbor Blvd?

Sorry, comment time is over.
