West Seattle generosity update: Donations for puppy mill rescuees

That photo is courtesy Teri Ensley of Furry Faces Foundation, who first asked us last week to let you know (original report here) that West Seattle businesses are collecting donations for the hundreds of dogs rescued from “puppy mill” operations in the North Sound. Last night, Teri and others took a pile of donated items up to two of the organizations that are helping care for the rescued dogs, and she reports:

Both shelters are so grateful for everyone’s generous donations. They have enough food for now (but will not turn any down)–and what they are in desperate need for are the following:

1. Lots and lots of toys for small to sm/med sized dogs
2. Lots of wee wee pads/puppy training pads
3. Bedding—beds, blankets, towels, etc.

Here are the businesses where you can drop off items:

Admiral District:
Mud Bay; 2611 Calif. Ave SW (dog food & supplies only)
Muttley Crew Cuts Co; 3707 Calif. Ave SW

Alaska Junction:
Hotwire Online Coffeehouse; 4410 Calif. Ave SW (dog food & supplies only)

Petco: 4732 Calif. Ave SW

Alki: All the Best Pet Care; 2820 Alki Ave SW

Morgan Junction:
Pet Elements; 6701 Calif. Ave SW
The Wash Dog; 6400 Calif. Ave SW
(added late Tuesday afternoon) Stella Ruffington’s, 7003 California SW

Westwood Village: Pet Pros; 9033 25th Ave SW

Teri says any other businesses interested in participating — and anyone who can help make future deliveries of donated items — is welcome to e-mail her at furryfaces@hotmail.com. Also, she says Muttley Crew Cuts staffers are heading north next Monday “to volunteer their grooming skills with some of the dogs,” and at least one other business owner is trying to help with grooming too. Teri also shared a link to this article about the whistleblower who touched off the investigation that led to the dogs’ rescue.

WAY TO GO! and WAY TO GO Muttley Crew Cuts, which rock by the way, so do all of the other business listed in this story.

The Muttley Crew crew are great. My pups love them. How wonderful that they’re using their day off (Monday) to bring comfort to those fuzzy ones who need our love and care.

I, too, love Muttley. So does my dog (yes, he enjoys getting his nails clipped!) Will be donating soon.

I just just trying to figure out where to take my dog for grooming. I found my answer- we’ll go to muttleys!
Also, any idea how long donated items will be accepted locally?

I’m planning my errands and will call ahead if no one knows…but does “dog food & supplies” include blankets/towels? I took that to mean they weren’t collecting cash. Anyone able to confirm?

I sent a note to ask Teri from Furry Faces – we have corresponded extensively about this and I don’t recall $ being mentioned, but there may be a way, or there may even be online donations for the organizations (including SPOT and Everett Animal Shelter, I seem to recall) who are helping the dogs.

I have accepted cash donations here at Muttleys as well as items including blankets. Bring it on in!!!

  • WSB January 28, 2009 (10:19 am)

Thanks for the fast answer, Muttley.

I guess I’m asking what “dog food & supplies only” means – other than cash, isn’t it all food & supplies?

Sorry Muttley, I have no pups and need cat food/litter so will be combining my trip, but HUGE kudos for participating! The puppy mills are a black eye on our larger community and I’m so glad to see such a broad effort to help.

I’ll circle back with any info I get re: my question.

I just called Mud Bay and at least for them, food & supplies does include blankets & towels, they just don’t have a way to process cash donations from the store. If anyone else was trying to clarify, hope that helps a bit!

    Hi All,

Sorry for the delay in responding to your questions regarding cash, food, blankets. REal quick–Stella Ruffington’s owner, Shane, has emailed us saying they will also accept donations of needed items and cash donations. Their address is 7003 California Ave SW.

    Answers to Quetions:
    1. Food & supplies does include blankets, towels, beds, toys, grooming items, food, wee wee pads, etc. Mud Bay does not have a method for processing cash donations. Other businesses are accepting cash donations and we will split cash between the groups that are caring for the seized dogs.

    2. WSB is correct, you can also go online to donate to the Everett Animal Shelter and SPOT.

    3. Several of our Grooming Businesses are heading up to help the dogs. Muttley Crews Cuts is going on Monday (yeah) and I believe The Wash Dog is going today or tomorrow. They are all wonderful!

    4. Think the businesses are willing to accept donations until the shelters state they have enough supplies, food, blankies, etc. and F3 is willing to continue delivery coordination. Thanks to the four individuals that emailed to state they would be happy to deliver up to Everett Shelter and SPOT. We will be calling you. ;0)

Hope the above info is helpful. Thanks to all of our wonderful businesses and people in our community. Cheers, F3

    Hi Everyone!

Just a quick update on Everett Shelter’s specific needs –and a quick thank you to The Wash Dog for going up there yesterday to bathe and wash dogs. The Wash Dog’s Bernadette and Jennifer also took up another load of West Seattle Donations!

Everett Shelter is currently in need of:

    1. Pinnacle Brand Dog Food–wet and dry–it is for the dogs that have skin conditions
    2. 3 mil thick trash bags
    3. Wee Wee pads
    4. Sponges with a ‘scrubby side’.

All of the other items previously mentioned are still needed….the above four items are just the really hot items. Thanks to everyone for supporting these dogs.

    Cheers,

Teri confirmed to me via email that gently loved used (clean) toys would be acceptable. I know my dog has a whole basket of stuff she never plays with, so I will drop them off at one of the donation locations.
