YOU CAN HELP: Donations sought for 80-person breakfast at Westside Neighbors Shelter

That’s a view inside the sleeping area at Westside Neighbors Shelter in The Triangle, which maxes out at 35 people except for cold-weather emergencies declared by the King County Regional Homelessness Authority, when 45 people can stay (KCRHA funding pays for extra security on those nights). Breakfast, however, is a different story, and they’ve been serving 80 people on the recent frosty mornings. So Laurie from the shelter board has forwarded this donation request list for breakfast – “the latest items we’re out of and really need”:

Ground coffee
Powdered coffee creamer
Instant hot chocolate packets
Instant oatmeal packets
Cup-o-noodles and ramen
Socks, stocking caps, winter gloves
Warm jackets

We have people come in in this weather wearing a t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers, and that’s all they have.

If you’re able to donate, dropoff hours are 7-11 am and 6-9 pm (the shelter is closed and the doors locked at other times); also, you can use this Amazon wish list to order online and have items sent directly to the shelter.

I live by the junction and every day two large groups of shelter breakfast patrons leave in mass to the bus stops on the corner of Fauntleroy and Alaska.

A group of about 10 to 15 take over both sides of the street waiting for busses all visibly nodding off, with the fentanyl drug hunch and openly smoking drugs off pieces of foil.

They are rude and aggressive and appear to be commuting here to get free food. . .

I used to donate and drop off at this shelter, but considering this ritual is now a daily occurrence and a bunch of them are clearly spending any funds they have on drugs, I feel like I am just helping junkies eat so they can spend the money they do have on drugs.

I see some many patrons walking there to and from the park on 35th. I really wish they could pick their garbage and not leave a mess that just ends getting blown around. The CARE team cleaned up the homeless camp in Camp Long along the fence and left a huge pile of garbage and after a few days they just moved the pile back inside the fence to the park. I’ve seen a few yell and harass pedestrians coming up the hill from the bus. So I don’t walk on that side of the street anymore. I wish something could be done to help and restore our parks so everyone can use them.

Real generous of you to use this ask for help to complain about people.

Seriously. What is wrong with people.

Well I live right by this corner and unfortunately many of the people that use the shelter are not living up the code of conduct that the shelter asks them to abide by.

Every single day a large group comes directly from the shelter and takes up both sides of the street on Fauntleroy and Alaska. They overtake the bus shelters and then openly hang out smoking drugs off foil and then nodding off while the rest are trashing the area.

They are rude and aggressive and don’t care about the people around them. So why should I care about them? I’d rather donate my money and time to a place like Marys Place and help out families in need than a bunch of addicts that don’t care what they do to the neighborhood.

So not really sure why I should have any empathy left. . . Everyone is entitled to their own opinions right, but if you don’t agree then start a discourse and change my mind. . .

Just shipped a case of stocking caps, mens’ socks, and stretch gloves from Bags in Bulk to the shelter, but they’ll take a few days to arrive. Will see what I can pick up at Costco tomorrow.

      Thank you, WS Res!
