This could have been me. As a pedestrian, I cross Fauntleroy every day and I have experienced many drivers not just come close to hitting me but some actively trying or threatening to do so. I am dismayed daily by the behavior I see. It is a real risk to my life and it is unacceptable.

I have experienced the same, at that location and others.

I agree. Drivers need to show more respect, patience, and consideration towards pedestrians.

I hope the person is OK. This is a very dangerous section of Fauntleroy and I’m surprised there are not more pedestrian accidents here. With the curve at Juneau limiting visibility for pedestrians and drivers, drivers go through here WAY too fast to react to people trying to cross on foot. If there are also cars trying to cross or turn onto Fauntleroy, it’s especially treacherous for pedestrians. As noted above, some drivers react angrily to realize someone is trying to walk (or run) across the street. I think there should be a pedestrian-activated stop light there before a tragedy occurs.

The fact that there isn’t such a signal there already is concerning. I hope in the wake of this incident, that SDOT makes installing one a top priority. It’ll be neglecence on their part if they don’t.

More stoplights, more crosswalks, more traffic calming.

I’m sure you’ll add an update if you get one. I’m really curious if the driver is cited. Too often we absolve drivers because of motor normativity. We want to excuse anyone operating a motor vehicle because 70% of Americans are licensed to operate motor vehicles. We do not want the “average” citizen to be accused of causing violence or harm on another being. But that is exactly what this is. Violence inflicted on a vulnerable road user. We have given over our public space to the car. We need to reduce car dependency, take back our streets and public spaces, and reduce this violence. Depending on changing driver behavior is a lost cause.

E is right.  To many of us, the question of whether the driver of the motor vehicle that ran over a pedestrian or bicyclist was cited is critical.  Motonormativity is real.

Wow….. The driver actually stopped.  That’s as rare as a coelacanth.

I requested the Seattle Department of Transportation to install a lighted crosswalk at this intersection 2 years ago for all of the reasons mentioned in these comments and was given a “there’s nothing we can do about it” reply and that this location wasn’t on their priority list. I replied to that two year old email today with our council reps CC’d:

Encourage others to send emails / call:

In the last week I’ve witnessed two separate drivers honk/curse/flip off pedestrians on Fauntleroy. In both cases it was someone trying to turn right while a pedestrian was legally crossing.

As a pedestrian, I have learned the hard way to keep my sense of entitlement in check. To many drivers, pedestrians are an annoyance and drivers think they always have the right of way.  Now I just wait until everyone has turned or I try to cross the street at a different corner.

How, and who do we reach out to, to demand that a pedestrian crosswalk with flashing lights gets put in at Fauntleroy and Graham?? Also, how to get people to SLOW down on Fauntleroy?

every morning i walk faunleroy between california and alaska and i can’t tell you how bad it is.  when they hit the mph sign on raymond i have seen it light up at 40-45 regularly. then they have to hit the brakes at the fairmount park school.  a lot of aggresssive drivers out there.

I’ve almost been hit at this intersection twice in the past year. Drivers rarely stop when I’m waiting to cross. Once, after waiting for a gap to cross towards the west, even though I’d already cleared the northbound lane, a blatantly speeding northbound driver began honking at me and swerved into the southbound lane (I was almost to the curb), flipping me off, and screaming obscenities at me out of her rolled down window. The jerk. I wasn’t quick enough to take down a license plate number.

Saka’s office and SDOT are largely unresponsive to traffic and speed-abatement inquiries that are not part of their current plans. BTW Herbold was no better.  After years of warnings about dangerous speeding on Marine View Drive—where drivers routinely exceed 60 mph —the response has been limited to occasional form letters that avoid the issue entirely.  My advice is to keep contacting them in writing and to save everything you send. It is a record of inaction.

There are a ton of drivers who don’t know the law–that you are required to stop for pedestrians at ALL intersections, not just those with a marked crosswalk.   I can’t count the number of times drivers yell at me or flip me off because they have to stop for me crossing legally in an intersection.

I have also been concerned about this intersection after multiple near misses. Is anyone organizing an effort to advocate for better pedestrian infrastructure on Fauntleroy? I’d love to get involved.

    • E January 30, 2026 (4:11 pm)

I will show up to advocate for any infrastructure that lessens car dependence. Lmk when and where. I can’t for early retirement when I can fully dive in.

I agree with everything written here as I have been almost hit several times at various intersections. One note of caution. The other night a friend and I were driving on California near Gennesee. It was dark and raining. A young woman wearing all black was almost invisible as she crossed the street. Fortunately my friend has very good vision and stopped. It was an accident waiting to happen. Please make yourself visible!
