UPDATE: Another car-onto-sidewalk crash

(Reader photo)

5:19 PM: For the second consecutive day, a driver has ended up on a business-district sidewalk in West Seattle. This time, it was the northwest corner of 42nd/Oregon – as shown by the street sign brought down on the car. We don’t know much about the circumstances, only that it was originally dispatched around 3:15 pm as a crash “with two patients,” neither described as seriously hurt/ill, and only one SFD engine was sent. (Yesterday’s car-on-sidewalk crash was at 16th/Roxbury.)

7:08 PM: Readers have added more info. Meantime, Dan sent this photo from another angle:

7:35 PM: SFD tells us two people were treated at the scene:

-74-year-old woman in stable condition, transported to Swedish First Hill via AMR.
-37-year-old woman in stable condition, did not need transportation to a hospital.

It was a two car collision, driver of the red car was taken with their arm in a sling via ambulance. Took this pic from the apts on that corner.

Jeez. That’s right across the street from Hope School.  That’s a really busy intersection with school dismissal at around that time- lots of kids and families out on the sidewalks. Hope everyone in the car is OK and I’m so thankful that there weren’t kids waiting at that intersection corner.

I was the car immediately behind the red car. The black car ran a red light and T-boned the red car in the middle of the intersection. Both cars spun and the black car ended up on the sidewalk. Thankful there were no major injuries.

      Take away their license

    Shall we blame the street?

It was right after Hope’s school pickup. We were there. Very scary. I am glad there were no serious injuries but shame on the black car. Had it been 10 minutes earlier, kids and parents would most likely have been hit.

I am a frequent pedestrian crosser at that 42nd/Oregon intersection. There’s an easy 20% risk of someone blasting west up that hill (westbound Oregon st.) and running their fresh red (just turned red from stale yellow) light there. This afternoon it was a newish white BMW that I saw do it. Easy 20% chance. Glad that nobody was seriously injured this time.

Oregon/42 & Oregon/California Ave are extremely hazardous crossings for pedestrians.

Agree. I hate that street. I dread having to cross it and try to avoid it. Just glad no kids got hurt.

Seems like every intersection is dangerous and yes around the junction is worse. There are so many nice courteous drivers who are careful and observant. But all it takes is one driver to be in a hurry or self-anointed get out of my way type driver. Best to always look at every driver at every intersection and never assume they see you or are willing to follow the traffic laws. Makes driving and walking across streets much more involved yet incredibly safer.

Looking in the eyes of the driver is not always possible. They could be on their phone, too tinted of windows, light not right, pedestrian not able to make eye contact, etc.

The last driver i looked in the eye at an intersection hit me head on, staring straight at me the whole time (was having a seizure).

Last week I approached 42nd heading eastbound. I stopped at the red and almost immediately the driver coming towards me, treated the red light like a 4 way stop.

The woman that was hit is having surgery today for a broken wrist and finger, hoping all goes well!

We need a 4 way stop or light at 39th SW & SW Oregon, horrible trying to see down that hill when crossing on 39th going NB.  Also trying to see around parked cars on EB Oregon.  They made the lanes on 39th skinnier but still scary intersection.

The sightline westbound coming up the hill is not good. About the only thing you can see is the northbound traffic. A little speed & you’re just gambling through the intersection. No , it’s not the road. It’s speeding through yellows (or reds). There was a sign above the check-in desk person at work; “Your Lack of Planning is Not My Emergency”.
