Remembering Fred Epps of Pegasus Book Exchange, 1953-2025

Last week, we reported on Pegasus Book Exchange in The Junction inviting customers past and present to share stories and memories about and for owner Fred Epps, Now, they’re renewing the request, with word that Fred has died. Emma Epps sent this update:

My dad (Fred Epps) was diagnosed with cancer on June 1st, 2025, and his health declined very rapidly even as we were waiting for more information from the doctors. He passed away peacefully at home in the early morning of June 18th after only two days in hospice care. That’s just the way he would have wanted it — no long lingering for him.

We will hold a public memorial in August, hopefully on the 16th which was his birthday; details to come. In the meantime, we welcome your Fred stories here.

If you would like to do something in his memory, we believe he would simply encourage you to support independent and local businesses, musicians, and artists.

The Epps family says that upcoming birthday would have been Fred’s 72nd; he was born August 16, 1953, in Washington, D.C. We’ll let you know when the memorial plans are finalized.

Emma and family. Such a loss. Fred added quality to my life throughout our many years of shared friendly acquaintance. He will be missed and always remembered. Perhaps his release provides some peace for him and a modicum for yourselves at this time. Sending you love. Janelle

Fred and Pegasus were such a welcoming part of weekly treks to the junction. He invited all to try new authors and gandras. Fred’s recommandations were always on the mark for trying any books.  The childrens and young Teens selections the best for my kids to browes while I was looking for a certain  book. Reading and Pegasus Books are such a corner stone to WestSeattle Community families. Fred’s smiles ,words of encouragement and laughter will be apart of the store’s memeories.  To Emma , family and staff all our heartelt condolences.

Oh my heart goes out to Emma and the Pegasus family. When I moved to West Seattle 20 years ago Pegasus was one of my first favorite local discoveries, and Fred’s friendly face was a big part of that.

The first time I saw Fred was a quick glance that stopped my heart as my mind thought ‘Here’s Stephen King (one of my favorite authors) in my favorite book store!’.The initial let down that it wasn’t SK was quickly replaced by Fred’s friendliness and shared love of books that I enjoyed chatting about with him over the years. We’re so fortunate to have had him in our community and hope that his family and friends find comfort in reading all the wonderful accolades shared by those he has touched and helped.

So sorry to hear this. Fred was so welcoming from the first time I wandered into Pegasus almost two decades ago. It was clear his top priority for the shop was encouraging voracious reading, and that ethos is palpable in all the staff I’ve encountered there. Thank you Fred, for cultivating that for our community.

Every time I walk past the store, all I see is your dad near the window. keeping busy. I hope he was able to reminisce and hear our stories of him with gratitude before he passed. Rest in peace.

Fred was so warm and welcoming whether I was browsing or looking for a specific book. When seeking something specific it seemed Fred knew whether or not he had such a book and exactly where it was. He will be missed but his spirit lives on at Pegasus. Condolences to his family. I am grateful to them for carrying on what he started.
