WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Gunfire in High Point

5:57 PM: And another gunfire call, about an hour and a half after the one at 35th/Barton – this time on 29th SW in High Point; officers just confirmed to dispatch that they’ve found casings. Haven’t yet heard the exact block; as is usual with these situations, the initial reports came from multiple locations where people heard it. No injuries reported. A silver “newer Accord or Civic” might have been involved, with yellow paper tags.

9:45 PM: We have no further information, but multiple commenters say the gunfire happened on 30th, not 29th as officers/dispatch originally discussed.

It’s weird to me to classify incidents like these as “no injuries reported”. It’s certainly factual, and I am deeply thankful that all the children that are usually playing outside at this time of day are safe. But there are never incident reports about the ensuing canceled plans with friends, or text threads between neighbors trying to determine exactly how long you’re supposed to lie on the floor after hearing an automatic weapon being discharged. Every time this happens it’s still disrupting and terrifying. And it is happening too much. The conversations parents are being forced to have with kids who are forced to grow up too fast–all of it is sickening.

HP Resident: Your comment describes the impact of living in a dysfunctional community. It is 100% unacceptable to live in fear of not knowing when gunfire will breakout in a neighborhood. I for one am fed up with the lack of leadership to solve these horrific problems that have been allowed to fester over the years.

This is the second time where I walked out to a literal shooting feet from my head with gunman on the loose and spd standing around not saying anything. Thank god there’s at least some posts here.

If you want updates, go talk to the officers and tell them what you know. They are likely to give you their card and take your contact information. I’m not sure what you expect them to do. Post on facebook? Knock on your door?

  I did that once for a shooting in this neighborhood. They asked me strange questions about myself (woman who was alone at the time), took my contact info 3 separate times, then released a description of the vehicle that was wrong. I do not recommend that approach.

It was on 30th, just south of SW Graham. Many casings found on sidewalk and parking strip, just 50 ft from a home childcare. At least one car and one house hit. Opposite end of same alley as Jan 10 gunfire incident. We have to stop this insanity.

Is it the same childcare house that was shot up in the drive by shooting last year? @wsb Obviously these houses are part of some sort of recurring crimes. As part of SHA, can’t the bad actors be evicted? (And before someone says they aren’t doing anything wrong. People don’t frequently target the same houses for no reason.)

Ya, that’s not the problem. Millions of kids grow up in those conditions and don’t become violent, most are good and productive members of society. Pandering to bad behavior is not helping. When a society allows and coddles these behaviors, they continue and get worse.

Why do people like you say things like this? Let’s assume that the actual solution is the long term project of equalizing wealth distribution. Does that mean that you think that the people who are impacted in the here and now (neighbors, victims, etc) should just say to themselves “hmm this is ok cause what else could I expect until we fix inequality?” Is it impossible that we might simultaneously say that both the inequality and the behavior are unacceptable?

We were those children too. We expect them to not have access to guns. We expect them to honor their own neighborhood and neighbors. We expect them to be home in bed at night. Like we were.

Have you ever even talked to the kids who live here? This feels like a condescending stereotype that doesn’t accurately depict most of them. Yes, many have hard-working/ overworked parents. And supervision after school hours may be spotty. They like to ride bikes and scooters, they like to play, chase ice cream trucks, some dance in cultural events, some are part of scouting organizations. They’re kids. It’s really disrespectful to describe them as having no prospects. They’re not single women in Jane Austen novels. I’ve seen plenty who are quite entrepreneurial and have self organized bake sales and dog walking businesses. I think they’re going to be tougher and more resilient in life than a lot of the techie crowd’s coddled children.

  Thank you for your comments about kids. I am worried that they have nothing to do all summer and I’m wondering what we can do to help them Stay busy and learn some skills that they might enjoy. I would like to see a Highpoint talent show, painting, baking, dancing, drumming, sharing all the different cultures. We have to celebrate.

Good Point Neighbor! We should totally accept these kids in stolen cars with stolen guns converted to fully automatic firing capabilities shooting up this block multiple times a week. They are just taking out their frustrations with the unfairness of life.

It’s absurd to say they have no prospects. Life in Seattle might not be easy, but it’s still relatively easy compared to much of the world. (That’s why migrants keep coming here.) It’s not that hard to learn a trade and make a decent living, if you can simply maintain a positive attitude and endure a few boring hours in school. It’s harder if they have adults telling them, falsely, that they have no prospects, and trying to promote despair and nihilism among youth to promote the adults’ own political or professional agenda.

Neighbor, my parents came home exhausted every day and our money was drum-tight, yet we didn’t go around shooting at people. High Point has lovely, expensive homes. Our neighborhood isn’t a ghetto. Far from it. Most of us here are homeowners.

In High Point we have about 600 units that are being operated by SHA. Let’s say that on average we have 2 kids per unit, which is a low estimate in our neighborhood. That means that we have about 1,200 kids in public housing alone. The vast majority are wonderful kids who study, safely play and enjoy this neighborhood along with their families. From what I noticed, we have 2 groups of kids , about 20 in total, who are troublemakers. Some of them commit serious crimes. The neighbors know them. The other kids in the neighborhood know them. I wouldn’t be surprised if the local law enforcement knew them as well. Those kids need help and they should be kept accountable for their actions.

Have you contacted the police with the proof you have about who was involved? There is evidence or an eyewitness right or are these unhelpful unsubstantiated rantings?
