WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Carjacking reported at Westwood Village (updated Monday)

11:46 PM SUNDAY: Police have just gone to the QFC parking lot at Westwood Village to talk with a woman who says she was carjacked while loading groceries into her car. Two people approached and took her car, she reported, a gold Nissan Maxima with plates starting in CAP. The two “unknown-race males in ski masks” were last seen driving the car south on 26th. Call 911 if you think you see it.

ADDED MONDAY: We’ve obtained the police-report narrative, with names redacted (X’d out):

XXXX stated that she was at 26XX SW Barton St QFC loading groceries into her vehicle. She stated that two unknown male or female suspects wearing ski masks approached her. XXXX stated that she was pushed to the ground causing pain to her forearms and her vehicle was stolen. XXXX did not see any weapons on the suspects.

XXXX stated that one suspect wore a light-colored sweatsuit and the other wore “tight” clothing and had brown hair in a ponytail. XXXX could not tell the sex of the suspects. She stated that the suspects were carrying several re-usable shopping bags with them. XXXX advised that the suspects left southbound on 26 Av SW in her vehicle, WA XXXXXXX from SW Barton St. XXXX refused any medical attention at the scene.

XXXX stated that her vehicle has tinted windows and a donut sticker in the back window. She advised that her license plate frame is glittered and shiny. XXXX stated that her purse, wallet and baby clothes were in the car.

QFC has security cameras at the main entrance, but the manager could not access the video footage tonight. He was not sure if the cameras covered the parking lot area of the store front.

Westwood Village needs to have at least 5 security people on site from the time the employees arrive for work until the last one leaves the property. So sad that it has become a haven for theft and crime. I rarely go there and I bet I’m not the only one who avoids it.

I’ve stopped going as well. That must have been terrifying for that woman.

I’ve avoided WWV for a long time now.  It started with only going there during day light hours about 7 or 8 years ago. Now, I don’t go there at all.  I fear for my safety, so just order online.

I used to go to WWV all of the time.  I have not been for about 5 or 6 years now.  When I do go to the store I use the online at Safeway and pick-up my groceries.  With all of the theft I do not even carry a purse anymore.  Only if I absolutely have to do I go inside of a store anymore. I am sorry for the woman who got robbed.

Most security guards are just the adult equivalent of hall monitors. They don’t use weapons nor do they get physical to protect you from criminals. They call the police. Best they might do in this situation is catch the license plate if they are lucky.

This city needs to take a proactive stance on crime by installing high definition cameras everywhere. With a shortage of officers, detectives,  back log of cases this is a reasonable eady solution to identify these crimminals. I want my tax dollars spent on this not a new turf field at Fairmount play field @spenditallsaka!!!

I don’t go to that QFC or the Roxbury Safeway when it’s dark anymore. Such a bummer, but I don’t feel entirely safe and this story just serves to confirm I should keep doing it.

Gee, sounds like a great location for a huge liquor store!

    • anonyme May 19, 2025 (9:28 am)

      My thoughts exactly.

Not sure what the liquor store had anything to do with this carjacking. Total Wine and more is at many locations. It’s a very nice store and security actually does their job and not stares at their phones. There’s also a protocol there where you’re not allowed to bring bags in. They do a fantastic job with potential shoplifters.

I think it’s a great location ! We have no idea yet what kind of security they’ll have in place. Stores & WWV management  both need to  step up security inside & in the parking lots.

Gee, Bob on Alki, it sounds like a great place for a huge grocery store, mattress store, Target 🎯 store, makeup store, Japanese store, sporting goods store, clothing stores, gym, pharmacy, dialysis center, post office, two large banks, several restaurants…

The race is known.  They were of the Human race.  Don’t you mean skin tone,  a possible nationality or perhaps a general ethnicity?

    • WSB May 19, 2025 (11:41 am)

That’s in quote marks because that’s an exact quote of the description broadcast by dispatch.

So much for City of Seattle Crime Stats “going down.”

This is a single incident, and therefore does not and cannot contradict a general statistical trend.

  • Deb May 19, 2025 (10:29 am)

I believe that Westwood Village property owners should  be proactive and install cameras  in known traffic and incident areas in addition to highly visibility security patrols. Those ‘blue light stations’ scattered throughout don’t seem to solve anything.

I’m sorry this woman had this experience. Carjacking can be frightening.

I was at Chase and Target this morning.   Sketchy looking guys were walking around WWV this morning. As a senior, I am very aware of my surroundings while shopping at WWV.  However, when I feel that there could be a problem with a sketchy person hanging out near the stores, in the parking lots, I always ask for a store employee to walk me to my car if there are no security guards.  They always oblige.FYI:  When a person is targeted, there are usually  two or three sketchy people setting up for a purse snatch, carjack.  That is why one must be constantly aware of their surroundings at any time of the day or night.

    • Alki resident May 19, 2025 (6:19 pm)

I will warn you, not everyone looks sketchy when they’re robbing you or causing crime. There are people that sit in their cars and wait for the right opportunity to carjack someone or rob them. I try to park close to entrances of stores when possible and have my head on a swivel.

I have been going to Westwood Village since the days The Keg was there. Never once felt unsafe.

  • WSB May 19, 2025 (1:27 pm)

Just added police narrative from the incident.
