WEST SEATTLE COYOTES: Gatewood group

Thanks to Krista for the photo and report:

Returning from an early grocery run just before 7 am … three coyotes ran across Holden and down 36th toward Kenyon. I circled around and grabbed a photo of the group!

You can browse past sighting reports here. We publish them for awareness, not alarm, and information like this can help us and them stay appropriately apart.

Great picture. I’m no expert, but they look pretty healthy.

Wow.  There are coyotes in West Seattle.  Never thought I’ll hear that.  I wonder if they around the parks, we do have lovely nature in WS

Beautiful animals BUT real dangerous for small kids & cats.

Keep your distance and make noises if it approaches.

    Keep your kitties indoors.  Yikes..

I read that it is mating season for coyotes between January and March and with these 3 looking very healthy I’m sure we will more and more in the area. Please keep your kitties inside and dogs closely on a leash when out and about.

There was a pack of them last week at 35/Andover. I think you had a post about it, but there were four. Looks like the same crew. I think they all travel together for miles because I saw two together two weeks ago.

Darkcami, you must be new around these parts.  Just search the WS Blog archives for stories about the local fauna.  Besides “coyote,”  the terms “eagle, turkey, and Guineafowl” come to mind as having made news since the Blog started in the early ‘aughts.  Ms Muul’s comment refers to the two coyotes at the right of the picture apparently urinating, to mark their territory.

I love coyote because they eat rats 🐀 and mice 🐁!

    • Bruce January 20, 2025 (11:29 am)

If only they ONLY ate rats and mice. Unfortunately they’ll eat your pets too if you’re not careful.

That is part of the coexistence advice. Don’t leave potential food sources out and available – from unsecured garbage to unattended small domestic animals.

Magnolia entered the chat: Coyotes are responsible for 95% of cat deaths here. For over 8 years our telephone poles have been plastered with 100s of “cat’s gone missing” signs. Small dogs too. Our block once had 14 cats. Now none. As a result our rat population has grown exponentially. UW performed a scat analysis from our 5 packs and found their diet consisted of 69% domestic feline, 11% rodents and roughly 20% lagamorphs (rabbits). You’re correct, they’re not restricted to “rats.”

No, they are not cute cartoon characters, but I am far more worried about dogs off-leash.  There have been a number of absolutely horrific national news stories of fatal maulings by off-leash dogs. There are some 4.5 million dog bites annually, btw, and 800,000 require medical attention.

Sorry, comment time is over.
