READER REPORT: Tree down on street bridge over Longfellow Creek

Thanks to Manuel for the photos and report: “A tree fell from the Longfellow Creek area and is blocking the small Nevada Street bridge in Delridge. SDOT is on the scene.” (Here’s a map.)

This was about an hour ago, so it might be clear now, but still noteworthy; readers also reported a tree down earlier this week by Dragonfly Pavilion, but that one did not appear to be blocking anything.

The beavers have been going to town in that creek for the last few years.  I’ve sent photos to ‘Find it Fix’ but I don’t know if they would prefer nature to take it’s course or not.  At one point there were about 6 trees fallen over right next to the foot bridge at SW Yancy/ Longfellow creek

    Beavers?

The tree may have been weakened by some previous beaver damage but the cause of the tree falling was not because of recent beaver activity. When beavers chew on a tree trunk there is a pile a fresh wood chips at the base of the tree. In this case there were none. The break in the tree was higher than a beaver can reach. My guess is a large box truck going over the single lane bridge hit some of the overhanging branches causing the tree to snap.

Yes..Beavers… They’re cute a cuddly. They’re making a mess all along the creek.

Beavers are amazing wetland engineers – here are some resources to learn more from local org Beavers Northwest: https://beaversnw.org/about-beavers

There’s also two big trees blocking the Longfellow Creek Trail right now.
