UPDATE: Deadly crash on SB 99 offramp to West Marginal Way

3:26 PM: Thanks to Tim for the tip. The offramp from southbound Highway 99/509 to West Marginal Way SW has just reopened after a deadly collision earlier this afternoon. The State Patrol says a Vespa scooter and U-Haul truck collided, and the person on the Vespa was killed.

5:31 PM: The State Patrol says the person who was killed was a 67-year-old Burien man. Its preliminary summary says he lost control and hit both the U-Haul truck and a car as they were exiting to 99. Those vehicles’ drivers were not hurt, WSP says.

ADDED THURSDAY: The man who died is identified as Steven P. Sandoz.

I wonder if it was the same man on a scooter that pulled out in front of me on 35th and sw Dakota just before 3pm. He didn’t even look and darted out in front of me north bound. It was close, but he didn’t seem bothered. Was a light green/bluish scooter, older gentleman.

The accident happened just before 1 pm. I drove by as the first responding fire truck arrived. The Vespa was yellow and under a truck. It was a heartbreaking scene. Sorry for the loss of life and all involved. It was a horrible thing to drive past.

I saw it too— horrible.  Good reminder that once you see something, you can never unsee it.  Wish I had not seen it. May he rest in peace. Bless him and his family.

I was driving just about a block behind the Vespa when the accident happened. I guess he was taking 509 to go home in Burien. The Vespa started zig-zagging rapidly so he decided to take the exit. While still moving forward, the scooter fell on its side and slid under a flat bed truck and the man was thrown into the wheel well of a U-Haul van. A terrible thing to happen on such a beautiful day.
