CRIME WATCH: Another stolen black Hyundai

This time, a black Hyundai Tucson. Janay says it was stolen Monday afternoon from 24th SW/SW 98th. License # BDR5034. The theft location is just south of the city boundary, so it’s a King County Sheriff’s Office case – if you see it and call it in, refer to incident # C23008410.

One way to reduce auto theft is to build more manual transmission vehicles.

Seattle is a terrible city for manual transmission  vehicles. It’s way too easy to get stuck stopped on a hill and have to take significant life off your clutch just to get started again. It’s also wasteful, both in terms of fuel, natural resources, and money. It may be a way to help prevent theft, but it’s not a feasible one.

Use the parking brake to keep from rolling backwards while starting on a hill with a manual transmission.

Condolences from a fellow black Hyundai owner (Elantra). I’m told by some I’m being “negative” in expecting mine to be stolen. Seems pretty inevitable given mine is a 2013, so not eligible for the anti-theft upgrade. :(

Steering wheel lock and hidden ignition kill-switch.

When I was having electrical problems with my car I put a kill switch on my battery to stop it from being drained. It’s a super easy $10 modification, anyone can do it (and I really mean that, it’s just something you put between your battery and the cable). And it’s probably enough to stop most opportunistic thieves.

I noticed a couple of pickup trucks around West Seattle recently with “boots” — the sort of thing originally used for parking enforcement, to immobilize a car if the owner has too many unpaid violations.  I wonder if that’s the frontier in anti-theft.  To steal your car, the thief would need equipment and know-how to defeat a boot.

I saw a newer parked truck just the other day with a heavy cable through the wheels and wrapped around the body several times. Kind of a hassle to undo every time you need to go somewhere but I get it having lost two cars myself.

Or they could just Homer Simpson it.
