UPDATE: Power outages in Seola Beach, White Center/South Delridge areas

7:50 AM: Thanks for the tips. 100 customers in the Seola Beach area lost power about half an hour ago.

10:25 AM: 104 homes still out after three hours. Checking with Seattle City Light to see if they have info on the cause.

11:09 AM: In comments, Sara says the Seola problem is a tree. Also in comments, CBOB points out there’s also an outage in the White Center/South Delridge area, affecting 48 customers:

SCL attributes this one to “equipment failure.”

2:40 PM: Neither outage is over yet. SCL now officially attributes the Seola problem to a tree.

6:21 PM: SCL spokesperson Jenn Strang tells us that “Crews are working to restore power to those affected in the Seola Beach outage where a large tree branch came down across the wires. Repair work is estimated to be completed (by approximately 7 pm).” Sarah sent this pic of the problem:

9:08 PM: As noted in comments, the Seola outage is over after 14 hours. The map shows the White Center/South Delridge outage is resolved too, though we don’t know what time that one ended.

We had a light flicker around 7:15 and then immediately after that, heard big explosion coming from that direction (Seola Beach Drive)

Ah so that’s what that noise was. I heard a boom, about 30 mins ago maybe, and the lights flickered a bit over in Arbor Heights. (Still on here though)

Lost power here at 35th / Ocean View Dr. approximately 730am upon hearing a startling BOOM!!!! Power still out. We survived wind storm, so this was odd to lose power this morning. Wild animal or perhaps wild human as culprit. Maybe a weak tree that finally succumbed.

Transformer (or something) blew right in front of my house. I saw it happen. They have been working on it for a while now so hopefully you will get your power back soon.

A tree fell down the hill and broke through the power lines.  That’s what caused the loud & bright flash of light this morning & the outage to follow.  An adjacent power line pole is also leaning at a dangerous angle now so it may take several crews & up to 24 hrs to fix this.Seattle City Light is on site but they have not started any work.  They may be waiting for a crew to bring a pole & cement before they repair the wires.

Photo of fallen tree that took down the power lines.

Photo hasn’t come through but maybe you can email us so we can add to the story? westseattleblog@gmail.com – thank you!

Is this related to the current WC outage? We are out at Roxbury and 17th.

    • WSB December 13, 2021 (11:08 am)

No, separate outage; that one’s attributed to “equipment failure.” Sorry we didn’t hear about it earlier, will add that to this for the record, looks like it’s straddling the city-limit line (SCL’s service area stretches outside the city both to the north and south).

I live down here on Seola Beach Dr.  Just saw the new power pole drive by.  Assuming we won’t have power for at least a few more hours.

It’s getting pretty chilly in the house! Hoping the power (THE HEAT) turns on soon.

Sorry, comment time is over.
