MAILBOX WATCH: 63rd/Hinds box is back

Thanks to the texter who sent the photo, reporting that Alki’s 63rd/Hinds USPS mailbox has reappeared. It had been gone at least three months. P.S. Looking for a mailbox? Here’s the USPS map (though it hasn’t re-listed the 63rd box yet).

And Why does it keep disappearing again?

What happened to the mailbox at California and Juneau? Next to the old Westside Pharmacy building. It had been there for more than fifty years and, then, several months ago disappeared.

The one at Juneau St. Market is still there…

There were a lot of mail boxes that disappeared prior to the last presidential election….Louis DeJoy probably knows what happened.

There have been financial problems at USPS for at least the last decade. One result was to remove collection mailboxes. This isn’t a Trump /De Joy thing as so many people want to point out. Also if De Joy is so bad then why is he still employed under the Biden Administration? Is it not Biden’s  fault as well? I just get so tired of people blaming Republican Administrations through the years for everything. Guess I will have to listen to uneducated statements until I die about how it’s Trumps fault like I still hear it’s Reagan’s fault. 🤦‍♂️

CD, Unfortunately, Biden can’t simply replace the DeJoy. It has to be done by the USPS Board of Governors.  But, Biden has announced replacements for two of them, whose terms are expiring, one of which is a DeJoy ally that is surprisingly Democratic. Hopefully, ousting him will better the chances of having the needed amount of votes from the BoG to, in turn, oust DeJoy. —Mike

While DeJoy is responsible for a number of dirty deeds (election interference, for one) mailboxes disappeared long before he was appointed.  The P.O. has been in trouble for a long time.  All mailboxes were removed in Arbor Heights at least 10-12 years ago.  Many of the banks of mailboxes installed in residential areas have slots for outgoing mail.

Easy come. Easy go. Am glad to see it is back. Gotta be my favorite mail drop. Why it keeps being vandalized or broken into I will never understand. But thieves seem to think there is something of value in a mailbox.

Looking at that map, I’d like to note that there is a paucity of mail drop-off boxes in the Delridge valley. Those of us in Youngstown must make a trip to Westwood Village or west up the hill to drop off mail.  Yes, I could put it in my locking mailbox for the mail deliverer to pick up, but with what I’ll call “security issues” in our neighborhood, making a trip to the post office is often wiser.

Unfortunately, I’d wager that if “security issues” are a problem in your neighborhood generally, then “security issues” would be a problem for any unattended USPS mail boxes, as well.   Don’t know if that’s a factor in the paucity you claim, but does stand to reason there may be some reluctance to place these where they might be more likely to be vandalized/rifled.

I see I obscured my main point — there is a scarcity of mail boxes, i.e., NONE,  in the Delridge valley until you get to the post office at Westwood Village..

Same problem for people in Arroyo Heights area.

  • AlkiBean December 16, 2021 (6:00 pm)

Hurray!  I can walk to this box rather than have to drive to the Junction or Westwood.

CD. Fact check. There is a 3 person board that has TOTAL control on who is postmaster. Trump appointed those people. Biden is working on getting new people in. Until he gets at least 2 in to vote Dejoy out he’s stuck with him. The reason the post office always has financial issues is that unlike federal-and private businesses they are MANDATED to FULLY fund their retirement plan. Unlike other federal agencies they can’t just go to the trough and get more. And unlike private business they can’t just walk away leaving employees holding the(empty)bag.

Flo is right. This funding problem goes back about a generation to when Congress (largely Congressional Republicans) thought it would be fun to sabotage one of the federal services that touches every American’s life in order to prove that Government can’t do anything right. Who cares that the Constitution basically mandates a Postal Service. Underfunding the IRS to prevent that agency from retaining the talent to go after wealthy tax cheats is the same story.

You can’t convince people government is awful unless you make it awful.

  • BW December 16, 2021 (7:49 pm)

Brandon & California box is still missing.

  • gnat December 17, 2021 (12:19 am)

The Westwood mailbox outside the post office has been struck by something large, is taped up and unusable.

  • Kathy December 18, 2021 (2:29 pm)

They changed the orentation of the opening to west facing (toward 63rd Ave SW) from previous north facing (toward the sidewalk).

Sorry, comment time is over.
