We’re in highpoint and I hear a lot of sirens out there. What’s going on?

As an occasional moral scold about bridge scofflaws I must confess: I finally scoffed the law myself last week to drive to Swedish for our baby’s delivery (everyone’s healthy, thank goodness), and again to race said baby to Seattle Children’s Hospital for what turned out to be a false alarm but could have been an emergency.I am curious about the timeline for warnings and/or tickets, though, as I’m hoping to plead “life-saving medical treatment” for those crossings, and I’m surprised that nothing has come in the mail even 12 days after the first crossing. Does anyone know how long it usually takes? Could we have just accidentally dodged a ticket entirely?

Anyone know why 1st Ave was closed this morning?

Wondering if anyone else has heard or knows the background on SW Stevens St, we heard that the City is going to rename it for whatever reasons happened way back when?

    • WSB August 6, 2021 (11:00 am)

No, there is no proposal/plan to rename it. Someone else mentioned something about this and I went looking around to see where it came from. The City Council’s Transportation Committee met this week to discuss naming a new bridge over I-5 at Northgate after the late civil-rights icon Rep. John Lewis. In discussion, Councilmember Lisa Herbold mentioned that a constituent had contacted her to say SW Stevens St. should be renamed because of its namesake’s background. Seattle Times reporter Mike Lindblom mentioned this on Twitter because he was covering the meeting (I cover a lot of meetings but this one had no WS agenda items so I did not).

I checked with her office and there is NO PROPOSAL for this. She made a comment during a meeting. You can watch the video via Seattle Channel (as I will when things slow down) – look for the Transportation and Utilities Committee meeting, John Lewis Bridge item. – TR

Thank you Tracy, I knew you would know something!

Just saw 26th SW is currently blocked southbound as well between Barton and Roxbury. Lots of fire trucks on scene. It makes me wonder if they hit a gas line.

    • WSB August 6, 2021 (10:31 am)

We have a separate story on that, at the scene now.

      • Cass August 6, 2021 (1:11 pm)

Thanks! I checked before commenting, but then saw your story appear right afterwards. I appreciate all of your hard work keeping us so well informed!

1st Ave was closed between Spokane St and Dawson this morning, and this evening as well, causing some commute headaches. Haven’t been able to see the cause, or how long expected – WSB any to get any intel about cause or length of closure?

    • WSB August 6, 2021 (9:33 pm)

It was something related to Seattle City Light activity, tracing back to an outage this morning. SDOT tweeted 15 minutes ago that it’s open now.

  • waikikigirl August 7, 2021 (7:33 am)

Commutes around here really SUCK…Almost, almost makes me want to jump onto the “Jort” bus! JK

Sorry, comment time is over.
