Early-morning sidewalk crash on Alki

Thanks to SG for the photo above and Stacy for the photo below. That car’s driver went up onto the sidewalk and into a staircase at the Sea Cliff Manor Apartments (2650 Alki Avenue SW) around 5:20 am today.

SFD and SPD responded. Nobody was hurt, Stacy reports. We’re following up with police to see if they have any additional information.

Little after 7:30 saw AAA tow truck take it to 56th & Alki to, i assume the owners place. Owner/driver was with it and looked fine so no injuries i assume.

As mentioned, we have an inquiry out to police, as our usual cross-checking system (Tweets by Beat) has been broken for weeks. I listened to the archived police-radio audio and there was no mention of anything like that, though, just a call for SDOT to come clean up crash fluids…

Obviously we don’t know yet, and might not ever, but I think a more accurate questions nowadays would be “drugs, alcohol, speeding and/or distracted driving.”

  Or swerved because there was an animal in the road (in that area, could be otters or geese crossing), or to get out of the path of another driver, or … Honestly, we don’t know, so speculation is pointless. I ran this because there’s obviously noticeable damage at the apartment building, in a highly visible place, and it’s the sort of thing we otherwise get questions about hours later “what happened at…?”

      15 mph into concrete can easily do that damage.

    I remember taking drivers education back in the day and the driving instructor telling us to hit whatever animal was in the roadway, because it was less likely to cause injury to ourselves and others on the roadway than swerving. I remember the gasps of several 15 year olds in the room when that was suggested as well!
