FERRY ALERT UPDATE: Fauntleroy backup starts early; Southworth terminal reopening

1:54 PM: In many ways, this will not be a typical Labor Day weekend. But in at least one way, it’s starting in typical fashion. Fron Washington State Ferries, “There is an estimated one-hour wait for drivers departing the Fauntleroy terminal.”

5:59 PM: As pointed out by commenters, the Southworth terminal is currently out of commission.

There will be no set time on sailings for the Fauntleroy and Vashon route at this time until further notice.

The Southworth terminal is closed to all sailings until further notice due to mechanical issues. Alternative routes include the Seattle/Bremerton, Seattle/Bainbridge Island and Pt. Defiance/Tahlequah routes. Sailings between Fauntleroy and Vashon will resume as scheduled. Updates will occur as more information becomes available.

WSF also says, though, the “extended wait” at Fauntleroy is over.

8:01 PM: The Southworth terminal is reopening, WSF says.

I could tell around noon, when I started hearing the lonnnnng car horn blasts that indicate a car breached protocol and cut in the line, or held up traffic to flip a u-turn. Be aware and courteous drivers, please!

No, no, no – no cutting in line. Karma will get you.Bad dog, no bagel!

I counted 8 tow trucks at 2 pm moving vehicles from the Ferry line parking.

    • WSB September 4, 2020 (3:37 pm)

Yup, we had a separate report on that recently. No grace period – at 2 pm, if you’re still parked, you’re at risk of towing.

Ah yes, the sound of summer. New Fauntleroy neighbors asked if it was quiet around here. I said yes, EXCEPT for the ferry line honking. And occasional shouting.

Love the ferries in general and the experience, but certain times they can be brutal.my folks moved off whidbey island last year, and while it was great to be able to have a free getaway spot (and see the folks) the holidays and summertime could be pretty challenging/frustrating.

Totally agree. It’s nothing like when I used to ride regularly in the 70s and 80s. I avoid it at all costs now. Cutting, road rage, long waits, etc.

I heard power out at southworth dock and all runs cancelled? Can someone verify?

Rumor is a ferry has broken down (not sure if one boat is still running), they’re refunding money on the Southworth side, but no updates on any websites yet.

Hey just heard from my brother the Southworth ferry dock has an issue … Something broke …and no ferries are landing or leaving at this time. You might want to check if you’re in line if there’s boats going over there at all.

Sorry, comment time is over.
