ROAD WORK, TRANSIT, TRAFFIC: Wednesday notes, 10th week of West Seattle Bridge closure

5:58 AM: Good morning – the 65th morning without the high-rise West Seattle Bridge. We start again with a road-work reminder – SW Roxbury repaving between 16th and 18th continues today. Here’s our preview; here’s the westbound detour map:

And here’s the nearest traffic camera:

On with our other featured cameras for the 5-way intersection at West Marginal/Delridge/Spokane/Chelan, and the restricted-access low bridge (note: SDOT cameras have been having intermittent outages):

The main detour route across the Duwamish River is the 1st Avenue South Bridge (map) – here’s that camera:

The other major bridge across the river is the South Park Bridge (map) – this camera shows the SP-side approach:

Check the @SDOTBridges Twitter feed for info about any of those bridges opening for marine traffic.

You can see all local traffic cams here; locally relevant cameras are also shown on this WSB page.

Wonderful weather the next few days to get out and practice that bike commute. Traffic is only going to get worse, eventually to absolute gridlock; the time to prepare and change habits is now.

I have a business on 17th just north of Roxbury and I work with a lot of disabled animals who need to be able to park in our parking lot.  The north end of our block is closed (it should be local access only IMO) and the only way in appears to be through fighting the construction mess.  I went up to the corner to try to talk to the traffic cop but it is too loud for him to hear me without me walking into traffic.  Is there some one to call to talk about making sure our street can be accessed?

Call SDOT for starters at 206-684-SDOT. That’s their general # but they should be able to reach the contractor.

Let me start by saying I am incredibly fortunate and grateful to have a job I can do from home during the stay-at-home order.  I am also fortunate and grateful that even when the order is lifted, I will not have to get across or under the West Seattle Bridge to get to work.  And, I love West Seattle and will stick it out with everyone else while we wait for a solution for our Bridge!  However, I had to leave the peninsula today to get to a medical appointment, and the bad behavior I observed shook my faith in our neighborhood a bit.  I saw: multiple passenger cars using the lower bridge; numerous cars speeding up along the left side of the right lane on West Marginal and cutting in line at the last second to get onto the 1st Ave. Bridge (talking to you, sunglasses and baseball hat in the white BMW); several single passenger vehicles in the car pool lane to get onto I-5; and a lot of jerky behavior in general–honking, speeding, cutting others off.  I hope everyone will remember that we are all going through a hard time right now, being inconsiderate of your fellow drivers will only make it more difficult!  Be kind.

You must’ve missed the motorcycles using the bike path.  I fear there will be a lot of road rage with all the cutters before too much longer and there seems to be a high correlation with German autos.  Yesterday’s evening rush was particularly bad returning into town.

Sorry, comment time is over.
