‘Families Belong Together’ march set for West Seattle on Saturday

Thanks to Kathy for the tip: West Seattle will be the site of one of the marches set around the country this Saturday to protest federal asylum-seeker-detention policies. The announcement invites people to gather “at the pavilion in the southwest corner of” Lincoln Park at 10 am Saturday and says the march will then head along Fauntleroy Way starting at 10:45 am. We have a message out to the organizer looking for more details.

    Where is the “pavilion”?

    Never heard of the pavilion”

That’s one of the things I’m hoping to ask the organizer if he replies to the inquiry I sent. Otherwise, I’d guess the shelter closest to the south play area.

Sounds mostly likely, although that would be the south EAST side of the park. I hope we can get a response since the downtown rally has been moved to the Sea-Tac Detention Center, which makes this one a better option for us.

Technically yes, but starting at a shelter on the shore wouldn’t seem to make sense if everyone’s subsequently going to march on Fauntleroy. However, I could be wrong.

    Where does the march end?

    • WSB June 29, 2018 (4:49 pm)

That was one of the questions I sent to the organizer, who still has not replied.

The location has apparently moved to High Point Commons “due to a permitting issue”.  Info available on moveon.org.  please spread the word.

The location has been changed due to permitting issues, the website now says the march will be held at Highpoint Commons Park.”Due to a permitting issue event has been moved to High Points Commons Park. Will be assembling at 10am. Check in with hosts wearing lanyards for free refreshments and handouts. Signs and sign making materials will be available as well. Will be starting to March on Sylvan Way SW towards the Southwest Precinct at 11:30! See you there!”

Just got this email about a site change. Due to a permitting issue event has been moved to High Points Commons Park. Park in the lower lot. Will be assembling at 10am. Check in with hosts wearing lanyards for free refreshments and handouts. Signs and sign making materials will be available as well. Will be starting to March on Sylvan Way SW towards the Southwest Precinct at 11:30! See you there!

Who is the organizer of this event?  Is there a website that gives more information?  It seems that with so little information available, the march may be cancelled or just a waste of time due to lack of organization.  I believe our local community wants to support this march in West Seattle, but may bail to go downtown where the event will be more meaningful due to it’s bigger size, better advertising about it’s details, and more consistency with its history.

Apparently it is a location change. Just found out and am publishing something separate.

This march is already doomed with its new route.  The one-way route is mainly in a residential area and a majority of it is down a long winding hill that divides a huge cemetary and wooded area.  The end of the route is at the bottom of the hill at the police station on a very busy and dangerous road.  Poor planning for this march.  Families who really want to make an impact could go to a better organized event that will truly be seen by many people and the media.

Sorry, comment time is over.
