UPDATE: Gunshots or fireworks? Whatever that was, police are investigating

9:41 PM: In case you heard them too, 911 has received calls about possible gunshots or fireworks heard from north Arbor Heights to Sunrise Heights (and we heard them here in Upper Fauntleroy). Nothing on the scanner at this point indicates a particular location, and no reports of anyone hurt anywhere.

P.S. If you were among those reporting something similar in north/northeast West Seattle around 2:30 am today – the final classification on the police log was “noise disturbance,” meaning they never found evidence of gunfire – no shell casings, no property damage, no victim(s).

10:25 PM: Comment consensus: Fireworks. (Police haven’t reported finding any evidence of gunfire, either.)

Police always check these reports out but they asked dispatch if they had received anything more specific – no, said dispatch, five calls of people hearing it, nobody having seen anything specific, so there was no particular location for them to go to. No indication any proof of gunfire has been found – no shell casings, no property damage. Sometimes that changes later (a few months back, people in an Admiral neighborhood heard something at night, found nothing, but then the next day spotted shell casings by their cars), but so far, nothing. And definitely no victims.

I live in Roxhill, on 9900 block of 33rd Ave. They were fireworks. I saw them through my north-facing bathroom window. Flashes in the sky were red.

Big televised game ended, yes? Check the time the game ended. Fans like to light firecrackers at the end if their team wins.

Definitely fireworks, definitely Arbor Heights. Sounded to me like the same people who light them off after Seahawks games. Sounded like the same area. I’m at 100th and 42nd.

No Seahawks game. Sounders game ended much earlier. Cowboys-Eagles NFL game ended by 8:56 pm (just checked Twitter). I tweeted right after hearing the noise at 9:32 pm. Apparently that’s about the time the Timbers won their game … don’t think I’ve ever heard of Timbers-fan fireworks in West Seattle, but there’s a first for everything, I guess.

They were beautiful ones whatever they were for.

  • Bonnie November 8, 2015 (10:49 pm)

I heard them. I thought they sounded like fireworks.

  • Lamont November 8, 2015 (10:53 pm)

Trust me it wasn’t Sounders fans lighting off fireworks tonight…

  • anonyme November 9, 2015 (5:48 am)

It’s a good thing fireworks are ILLEGAL, otherwise this s–t could be happening all.the.time.

  • HelperMonkey November 9, 2015 (8:26 am)

I knew there was no game, but figured it was the same people. they seem to have a surplus of fireworks, and when I heard it I immediately knew where it was coming from and it never sounded like gunshots in any way.

  • Kimmy November 9, 2015 (8:29 am)

I have never heard fireworks for a Sounders game (I live in this vicinity) but fireworks are the norm for every win or touchdown/FG for Seahawks. Seems like it would be an easy target to rack up some illegal fireworks violation $$ for the city, and easier to do so than the time around the 4th.

I heard them too, and I’m also and 37th and 98th. The first series of loud pops sounded like they could be shots, but the giveaway is the rapid small pops at the end. Fireworks.

I heard them again just a few minutes ago. Near Westwood. I think it’s fireworks.

    • WSB November 10, 2015 (6:29 pm)

Yes, we heard the same thing, and it sounded just like the ones two nights ago. Nothing on the scanner or 911 log indicates otherwise so far.

Sorry, comment time is over.
