West Seattle Tuesday: Fauntleroy Boulevard ‘open house’; WSBWCN hears about ‘repeat offenders’; more

Two major meetings are part of our highlights from the WSB West Seattle Event Calendar:

2-DAY CLOSURE FOR HARRY’S CHICKEN JOINT: The folks at Harry’s Chicken Joint (WSB sponsor) asked us to let you know that they are taking a two-day break, so they’ll be closed tonight/Wednesday night, back on Thursday, 4-8 pm (and remember, they’re open Sundays now, too).

(Added photo: First sunrise of fall, by Lise Thivierge)
LUAU/HAWAI’I-THEMED PARTY: Special event with a special menu and island music tonight at Salty’s on Alki (WSB sponsor) – details in our calendar listing; reservations required, so check to see if there’s still room. (1936 Harbor Ave. SW)

FAUNTLEROY BOULEVARD OPEN HOUSE: Years in the making, now in the design phase, the “Fauntleroy Boulevard” plan would bring major changes to Fauntleroy Way in The Triangle, from 35th SW to SW Alaska. At an open-house-format meeting tonight – 5 to 7 pm, drop in at any time, Senior Center of West Seattle – you can take a closer look at what’s planned so far and tell city reps what you think. (Oregon/California, enter on the north side and head upstairs)

REPEAT OFFENDERS – WHAT (IF ANYTHING) CAN BE DONE TO STOP THEM? We’ve reported on some of them – property-crime repeat offenders with countless victims. They get arrested, spend some time in prison, get out, and in many cases, start all over again. Now authorities say they have a new plan. Come hear about it directly from prosecutors at tonight’s West Seattle Block Watch Captains Network meeting, 6:30 pm at the Southwest Precinct. (Delridge/Webster)

NIGHTLIFE: Multiple listings on our calendar every night of the week – tonight, for example, you’ll find eight listings, including live music, open mike, bingo, karaoke, and trivia. See them all here.

P.S. – DOWNTOWN EVENT FEATURING YOUNG WEST SEATTLE WRITERS: If you are, or could be, downtown tonight, you have the chance to cheer for young writers from West Seattle and beyond. Here’s the announcement:

On Tuesday, September 23, the West Seattle community is invited to the Seattle Arts & Lectures’ Writers in the Schools Anthology Reading & Celebration. The Writers in the Schools Program (WITS) places professional local writers in public schools to develop writing skills and spark inspiration. Since 1994, the WITS program in the Seattle area has been helping students discover their own authentic voices. Featuring creative writing by students in last year’s program, this reading by 50 young authors will move the audience to tears, laughter, awe and wild applause.

This year’s anthology includes writing by Chief Sealth High School students Adam Krzeszowski, Shayla Pilarski, Isabella Renz and Harrison Robel; West Seattle High School students Abigail A. Alishio, Lucas Lavoie, Jackson Oehling and Michael Smith; and Lafayette Elementary School students Kenji Brown, Liam Bunting, Parker Campbell, Savannah Joy Faber, Elanor Gunlogson and Gavin Mountry. A number of these students will be among the featured readers.

The readings will take place in the Nordstrom Recital Hall at Benaroya Hall, beginning at 7 PM on September 23. The events are free and open to the public. The young authors will sign copies of the anthology, and a reception will follow, with sweets donated by Cupcake Royale.

has anyone else noticed that placement of these bike racks blocks access to the green-arrow right turn lane at the junction?

  • Diane September 23, 2014 (2:38 pm)

hmm; well I’d have to disagree with the comment by Don Brubeck; my experience has been that if there is even one car ahead of you at the northbound signal, the bike racks prevent anyone behind that car from turning right on the green arrow; check it out next time you go through there; if the bike racks were installed just a few feet further south, cars could get through; seems to me the right turn lane access is primarily blocked, UNLESS you are the 1st car in the queue; it’s not a huge issue, since it used to be that cars were often parked there, so a car wanting to turn right could not access; but now it’s a permanent barrier to right turn

But there never was a right-turn only lane. It has always been a through lane that just happened to allow a right turn if you weren’t behind someone going straight. So, yeah, I guess you could sometimes squeeze past the through lane, but I don’t think it was a designed feature.

    Re: Fauntleroy Blvd Open House

Three, possibly four, places to meet in the triangle and they meet in the Senior Center?
VFW, YMCA?, American Legion/Vet Center, WS Brewing Company.
    Nice.

Please let the city know what you think about that. The Senior Center has been the site of almost every city public meeting in WS – Design Review, other DPD/SDOT events – for the past year-plus, except for a smattering at Youngstown. Didn’t used to be that way; they floated to a variety of locations, often near the project site. But for some reason this seems to have become the default.

  • Diane September 23, 2014 (4:19 pm)

what is objection to meeting at the senior center?

  • kg September 23, 2014 (6:39 pm)

    Diane
The Senior Center is a fine venue that serves the community well. However, I feel that a topic that includes the Triangle should be held in a venue located in The Triangle.
The topic for the evening is Fauntleroy Blvd Open House and to quote WSB above:
“Years in the making, now in the design phase, the “Fauntleroy Boulevard” plan would bring major changes to Fauntleroy Way in The Triangle”.

One would think that something that has to do with the Triangle area would hold its event in the Triangle.

    WSB,
I have sent an email to the linked email to state my concerns.

    Commenting on what Diane wrote:

Why are some people fixated on the idea that the streets belong only to cars and anything that impedes that is outrageous.

I think this attitude is why most drivers do not stop for pedestrians trying to cross the streets in crosswalks or at corners, even though it’s the law and not a courtesy.

We live in a growing vibrant city, and our neighborhood streets are not freeways. They are multi-use. Seems many drivers will resist sharing the roads, regardless of law or civility.

Griping about falsely perceived losses of some right that never existed is silly at best.

Has Salty’s food improved beyond the cafeteria taste that disappointed my husband and me many years ago when I took him for his birthday?

  • Diane September 23, 2014 (9:47 pm)

@Kg; thanks, I get that concern; in this case though, it’s only 2-3 blocks away, and often hard to find venues; I participated in 1st open house for this boulevard project, 2 yrs ago, in same room at sr center; glad to hear you contacted the city

Regarding the “bike corral” – will it be placed on the sidewalk after the construction adjacent to it is complete? (I’ve driven by several times and have only seen one bike parked there.)

Yarnbombed, eh? Cool. I just hope it gets moved when it is possible to do so.

I’ve driven by several times and have only seen one bike parked there. There are many racks throughout the nearby blocks, many occupied – I would guess that bikers like to use the ones that are most convenient to their destination. (Like drivers want parking most convenient to their destination. I’m a senior citizen with very bad arthritis, don’t bike and need parking nearby. This makes it difficult for me to frequent these businesses in the junction.)

Sorry, comment time is over.
